As much as I see the appeal of being a cat lady with a bazillion cats--space and expense withstanding--one cat alone is exhausting.

Maybe it's the youthful energy of a one-year-old. Get a pair, they say, as if I can't multiply.

I’m very very tired of “living in fear” being lobbed at maskwearers by people who frequently say they can’t wear one because no one else around them is.

Living in fear is ignoring science and endangering lives and your own health because you’re terrified of not fitting in.

The deadly mermaid is here! She is a little bored today, no one new to meet and greet in the sea and invite down to the depths with her💀
An illustration of a mermaid laying on her side with her back to us. She has pale hair and a red tail with dark pink skin. Her fins are translucent and can be seen to be so as they curl around her back. Around her are bones and skulls of humans. She rests her arm on a skull. The background is a plain light peachy pink

ICE has arrested a singing giraffe in Portland. Will he form a band with the banana clarinetist who was playing Ghostbusters that they've already arrested?

When will our government begin obeying its own laws regarding freedom of speech and freedom of assembly?

Get these ICE thugs off our streets.

Not sure if anybody is doing it better than @juliadoubleday.bsky.social —Please read:

“when you shrug off the difficulty.. of practicing COVID safety.. you are casting that burden onto the shoulders of those who are already carrying more than you are. ”

Link: www.thegauntlet.news/p/beyond-all...?
Why not recognize: wow! What a difficult reality we’re creating for anyone who’s been harmed by the virus. That could be me next, since I’m getting reinfected in these bi-annual waves. Instead of complaining that disabled people are asking me to participate in normalizing COVID mitigations, why don’t I acknowledge the absurdity and severity and difficulty of this situation? Why don’t I participate in changing the culture before it’s my turn to suffer as others ignore me?

Yes, it is difficult. It is burdensome. You could call it unreasonable! But when you shrug off the difficulty and burden of practicing COVID safety in the current climate, you are casting that burden onto the shoulders of those who are already carrying more than you are. Who can afford infections less than you can. Who in many cases have fewer resources than you do and almost certainly have fewer safe social outlets than you will.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.
Los Angeles County declares state of emergency over immigration raids
Los Angeles County officials voted on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency over ongoing federal immigration raids.

Most people aren’t asking you mask at all times.

They ask that you mask in essential places: public transit, hospitals, doctors’ offices, pharmacies etc.

Places high risk people can’t avoid.

But if you hate wearing masks? Then advocate for indoor air quality: ventilation, filtration, etc.
jamellebouie.net
yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

Let's talk about what the process of submitting short fiction used to look like, shall we? And about what it looks like now.

Jackie Merlos represents the best of Oregon. Today, she had a hearing on her immigration case. We have fought with everything we have to reunite her with her children and end Trump’s cruelty.

Take a few minutes to appreciate Drew Struzan creating the original artwork for THE PHANTOM MENACE. Truly a master at work.

Honestly, I think they just became frightened considering the very idea of organ donation and what that means. Facing your mortality with all this death around can be unnerving. And people with body parts that used to be in other people--that's unsettling, too!
shannonknight.bsky.social
the kernel for your next novel
shannonknight.bsky.social
It was so strange that I keep thinking about it! If anyone has reacted before, it was to share that they found it admirable. Maybe the donor part AND that I was wearing a respiratory mask alarmed them. But I definitely became scary AFTER they read that part.
shannonknight.bsky.social
Sorry! I know you're writing Frankenstein stuff, so I thought it would be of interest for your project.
shannonknight.bsky.social
Oh, there's been some really unsettling reports, though, about organ donor abuse that might interest you.

Also, I had someone drop my ID--they were so unsettled to see organ donor written on it. I freaked them out after that. It felt weird.

Yes. The most frustrating aspect of COVID is that we see zero attempt to make systemic changes to resolve the problem. People are just trying to pretend it doesn't exist or hefting it on individuals. We could be normalizing HEPA filtration systems in hospitals, schools, stores...everywhere, really.

There are studies showing damage to blood vessels… even in kids…

I’m not saying that we need to get paralysed by fear… but we do need to deal with this, the way we deal with smoking (a shared dirty air problem) or TB (a multisystem airborne infection that needs control).

This Portfolio Day seems to include a lot less ALT text use than previous ones.

We had the first good frost last night, and I've learned that Little Bat, small but mighty, seems to weigh a LOT more when she settles in to sleep between my scapulae. 🦇🐈‍⬛

Just a reminder that By the Pact not only has a new cover (along with the rest of the series), but it's still free. If you like stories of friendship that never wavers, powerful magic, cunning demons, and conniving politics, check it out!

Available in all online stores:

Image of for covers in Pacts Arcane and Otherwise by Joanna Maciejewska and a quote:
"Better start running." Veelk held his defensive stance, dodging just out of their reach only when he had to. "And pray to your demon to give you some magic."
"I don't pray to any demon," she muttered out of habit.
"The running part still stands."
