I think this is always more important than the setting trying to justify how something fantastical works. I care way less about your pages of text on how this unscientific thing works in your universe, I care -way- more about how it affects people/society, how things change because of it.

When I had cancer, a couple of folks sent me some bullshit fake cure things. The Secret, chi gung DVDs to buy, etc.
It was a way of dismissing my problem & leaving me to die.
I think of this a lot when I see "resist" accts that proudly talk about knowing your rights vs. Eye Cee Eee.

Take this a step further! Someone talks about "is this canon", rejoinder with "whose convention?" because different sects have different canons! Canon is a term for "the accepted works forming the body accepted by this group", not "this is true"! REALLY get up in some fandoms' grill about it!
fandom took "canon" from the Bible, why not also take "apocryphal" to refer to side material in which canon status depends on who/when you ask
