Shirime is one of my favorite yokai, not only because it is visually funn, but because it was created as a one-panel gag by artist and poet Yosa Buson, and has now lasted over 270 years and even appeared in a Studio Ghibli flick.
All of Buson's serious work has faded away, but shirime remains.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.
