Niblings are great. The little one mashed the potatoes and the big one plated the whipped ricotta crostinis way better than I could.

Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

Watched a video this morning of a woman using a (new, clean) caulk gun to squirt Velveeta cheese into her Bugles. Watched another showing a woman turning shed cicada exoskeletons into fairy lights for her plants. Couldn't help but think,

AI could never...

Yesterday's respite from the terrible terribleness: a delightful evening baking pavlovas with my niblings.

The big one is in charge of the nuance of egg white peaks. The little one is in charge of food coloring and edible glitter. And my sister is in charge of the aftermath in her kitchen.

I'd like to take a moment to apologize to any of my former English teachers. If I ever looked exasperated because it seemed like you spent too much time on the importance of tone, I'm sorry. Clearly, it is never enough.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

Does this mean that I'm still eligible for the public health Olympics?

🚨Dept. of Education proposes to exclude public health degrees from the “professional degree” category.

That means new public health experts could lose access to key higher ed resources, like loan limits & reimbursement.

A bold strategy to let infectious diseases win! 🦠

I no longer want the confidence of a mediocre white man. Now, I want the audacity of the person sending fundraising emails for the Democratic National Committee today.

this.
Assume all the yes and no votes from Dem senators are strategic and not sincere votes. The party caucus made a decision. No way to know how many were in favor. Then the caucus decided who would vote yes and no based on what would protect each of them politically the most. That’s how this works.

Not sure what hashtag or starter pack led to my new followers this week, but hello!

Sorry if my feed proves disappointingly quiet... Our faculty union has advised us not to go around poking bears, and I have very limited self control when I scroll through BlueSky with my bear-poking stick

This afternoon, I chose to honor Dick Cheney's role in shaping my radical leftist politics by voting to increase my own taxes. Given how many races have already been called for the Dems, it's nice to see so many Americans chose to honor his memory in a similar fashion.

I love kids. I have two of them. They’re amazing. However, kids are the absolute least self aware, clumsiest little puffins on the planet.

Please don’t drive tonight unless you have to, and if you do drive, drive super slow and pay 100% attention at all times.

Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻 💀

Right right... the world is terrible... everything about pitting the needs of middle class Americans who need the ACA credits to afford health insurance against the needs of working class Americans who need SNAP benefits to afford groceries is gross.

And I hate it here.

Public servants do just that, serve the public. It’s in our character. Thank you, furloughed Feds, for continuing to give back.
Here in Seattle, furloughed NOAA employees were out in the pouring rain cleaning up beaches yesterday, part of a national week of service organized by federal workers who can't do their jobs due to the shutdown.

Story by @heyjohnryan.bsky.social at KUOW, our federally defunded public radio station.

I want more people to care that SNAP benefits are being cut off on November 1. 40% of SNAP beneficiaries are children. This is callous and vile.

I am comfortable with closing the banks and post offices once a year to give people a chance to rewatch The Goonies.

(But as it is also Indigenous Peoples Day, we should probably read some history and spend some money before we make the popcorn)

The death of the premature baby born after their mother contracted measles highlights the danger of more and more people refusing vaccines.

An individual is contagious 4 days before the rash appears.

Imagine a child with measles at a daycare full of babies too young to be vaccinated.
