Oh I see what we're doing here.
Putin said Russia is "ready to consider" halting strikes deep into Ukraine on election day, claiming 5-10 million Ukrainian citizens in Russia should vote in Ukrainian elections on Russian territory.

Russia is losing billions of dollars each month because of oil sanctions... Discounts on Russian oil have risen to 30% and in some cases over 50% (!) relative to Brent.

I mean, this is objectively not true.
I just gave my 20yo a rundown of the day's news, and he said, "It's all so dumb, it's hard to take seriously and so it's hard to fight. We'd be better at fighting smarter authoritarians!"

"We'd be better at fighting smarter authoritarians" is going to stick with me.

Ukraine (under pressure) gave up its nuclear deterrent for worthless security guarantees. Now russia has successfully used nuclear blackmail to attack Ukraine with minimal consequences. That's not de-escalation, it's an incentive structure for non-nuclear states to get their own nukes.
🇯🇵🚀 Japan needs to possess nuclear weapons, a security official in the administration of Prime Minister told journalists.

"In the end, we can only rely on ourselves. It's not a matter of the near future."

Kyodo writes that the statement could provoke criticism outside the country as well.

Real coherent policy we got going folks.
The US is preparing new sanctions against Russia, which could be announced as soon as this week, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, cited by Bloomberg.

This article made me dig up an old Facebook post I made on the eve of the 2016 elections. Unfortunately, too much of it holds up today. For those of us who have lived in totalitarian regimes or know our history, the signs of Trump's white nationalist authoritarianism were plain to see:

Virtue signaling is not only acceptable, actually, it’s good and necessary to foster healthy communities, especially in a time where vitriol and hate is mainstream

I’ll also note that there are 25 million naturalized citizens, so even if the Trump admin succeeded at its wildest dreams, we’re talking 2,400 denaturalizations a year, or 0.01% of the total naturalized immigrant population.

So it’s more to spread fear and send a message than make a tangible dent.

If you think "they can't do this" - what will stop them? Because SCOTUS will stop them? Because they will respond to outrage over how unjust their immigration actions are? Look around. They don't care. They revel in the injustice.

Trump's reprehensible attempt to deport courageous Chinese dissident Guan Heng is part of a broader pattern of deporting dissenters/victims of persecution back to their oppressors. The policy is simultaneously evil and stupid: reason.com/volokh/2025/...

Russian oil revenue in complete collapse. Keep that in mind for any budget or negotiation conversations.
Just a heads up the Russian oil tax for December is looking like it's going to be over 22% lower than the lowest result in 2025. We still need to see the official exchange rate but eyeballing it it looks like 8204 Rubles per ton. Here's the chart for this year:

Brent crude is selling below $60 for the first time in nearly 5 years. Which means russian Urals oil is selling below $40. So that's nice.

The message that Trump and Marco Rubio are sending is that America does not care about human rights and are all too happy to punish those who do. Even from a purely self-interested perspective, this makes no sense as it diminishes America's soft power in the world.
A Chinese dissident filmed Uyghur detention sites and then released the video on YouTube after fleeing China. He sought asylum in the US. Now the Trump admin wants to deport him to a country with strong ties to China.
