“Any decision to admit a new member would have to be backed by all of the EU’s 27 national governments.”

And the European Parliament

And be ratified by each of the EU(27).

In France, default requirement is ratification by referendum

EU needs to reciprocate immediately. After ushering un an era ot the kind of fascisim Europe fought hard to defeat (and is now rising again), not a single MAGA chud should be allowed set foot on the continent - including its government.
NEW: Five years of social media history is only a fraction of what the US Government will shortly demand of overseas visitors.

The full requirements will end tourism in the United States.

Below is the full, mind-blowing list.

The European Union has triggered Article 122 to indefinitely immobilise the assets of the Russian Central Bank, worth a whopping €210 billion.

I explain what just happened and why this is such a big deal for Europeans.

EU approves legal workaround to sideline Orbán, keep Russian assets frozen forever
The EU’s decision undermines the Kremlin’s hopes of unfreezing the money under a post-war peace settlement.

In praise of Seattle, which set up a huge Pride programming connected to the World Cup match it’s hosting - before anyone knew which teams would be taking the field.

Turns out it was Iran v Egypt, two countries where homosexuality is illegal. Egypt wants Pride banned.

Seattle isn’t backing down.

It was in 2017 that I first became convinced Brexit was won as part of a Russian strategy to totally destabilise Europe and everything that has happened since has reinforced that.

A serious indictment of our politics and media that CETA, which has been adjudged to be unconstitutional by the Irish Supreme Court (Costello vs the Irish Govt), was passed overnight by the Government and there’s barely a ripple of curiosity, let alone rigorous questioning.

It's not just the state coffers to watch in Russia. Companies, households, banks, regional governments - they are all about to run out of money at the same time. Could be a perfect storm coming.
One Russian paper today: ““We will not agree to a truce because we need the capitulation of Ukraine.” Meanwhile: “Nearly 60% of Russian regions have a hole in their budgets of over 600 billion roubles, almost 11 times more than in 2022.” #ReadingRussia

Coffee thoughts:

Ireland is a polity where you can go and visit a Minister in a constituency office on a weekend to ask for help filling in a form.

The distance to/from officeholders is effectively zero.

But the distance for most people from *power* can be (invisible to them) huge.

As we in Europe sit around waiting to see what mad nonsense Trump comes up with next for Ukraine, I find it hard to take the handwringing seriously. We made a choice in 2014 not to respond to the very obvious aggression and retain our faith in America always being on our side.
