Watching the new Knives Out & [mildest of spoilers] I'm pretty sure Rian (or at least the set designer) isn't/wasn't Catholic. There are lots of little details that are wrong, or missing. It all feels like aping the aesthetic because the RCC is an easy target, not even (righteous) ex-Catholic rage.

Leaving the theater after watching Signs.

I arrived at the theater in daylight. I left after dusk. And the theater was entirely surrounded by a cornfield.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

Talked about punishment and shame on the Tikytoks today.

And how the punishments white supremacy doles out to nonconforming white people are effective precisely because so many of us are taught that we are fundamentally flawed if we can’t earn social connection and approval.

Petition for Rahul Kohli to get cast as a werewolf (Flanagan has done ghosts and vampires, this doesn't seem like a stretch), please and thank.

While I'm in high dudgeon, y'all or there complaining no one makes podfic of your fic but y'all don't have blanket permission statements. Just put a note in your AO3 profile: podfic welcome.

You'll be shocked by how it makes people feel like their podfic is welcome.

A lot of times when right wing culture warriors say "bring back [thing]!" they mean "let [thing] be the unquestioned standard again, packaged in a way that's accessible to me in my current lifestyle/standard of living, and immune from critique."

You can defend your fave without advancing the pet causes of the far right (like suggesting dog whistles aren’t real, and insisting everyone is Too Woke Now you Cant Say Anything), or behaving as if some people saying a celebrity is being racist is you being personally attacked.

3) The effort is the juice! The effort is the high! Mastery of a skill is an unparalleled buzz. "Having written" is nice yes, we all joke about that, but *the making is the pleasure*. Men who've never experienced that, trying to steal it because ironically *they do not know its value*, is a sin.

"Fandom is a space where politics should be left at the door!"

Well a convention I'm working with is currently discussing what to do if ICE raids the hotel it's being held at, so jot THAT down.

My wife, while we're watching the Van Helsing TV series: "This is terrible, let's keep watching."

(We've both agreed that the worldbuilding feels very half-baked and we can't figure out why it has FIVE seasons.)

I loathe "it's not that deep" people because literally nothing is ever that deep to them.
Not engaging critically with the media they consume.

“It’s not that deep.” And yet, here I stand, making it that deep!

Apropos of someone bringing it up:

The curtains are blue because the author (or set designer or colorist, etc.) made them be. And even if it was because they felt there needed to be a bit of color information in there and they happen to like blue, that's still a choice and asking "why" is healthy.

I hate the metaphor "trim the fat" and I love this thread discussing why it's bad actually!
most famously fat is a store of resources built up in rich times and drawn down in lean times. but it's also a protective layer against external shock, an anti-wear substance distributed throughout the system, it both retains and generates heat for homeostasis—and these uses do not consume it!

queer creatives have spent their entire lives surviving out of spite, the idea that you could make some of the most justified haters on earth acquiesce to genAI is delusional.

I've trained my entire life for this, you are like a little fucking baby. I will spit on your name from my deathbed.
“AI is clearly sticking around so you have to get used to it” wrong. I don’t have to get used to shit. I am a practiced hater and I can keep this going for decades if I am required to

The death in the penultimate episode of Invasion was so telegraphed that I said out loud "one of those two is gonna get got" literally three seconds before it happened.
