"narrative" is used as an umbrella term for a bunch of different things - plot elements, point of view (narrator), tone (narrative discourse), setting (elements that are in relationships with people), pacing, and so on. Eventually it represents so much that it just means "the writing"

I have been heartbroken for students of mine who are recent graduates and just cannot find a job. We gave them internships, job training, preparation courses for the job market, etc. . . . but all the resources in the world don't make up for the economy nosediving and jobs disappearing. It's awful.
