It's new podcast day! This week's episode is about Modular Cubes- Cubes without a fully static card list, but with elements that can be mixed and matched, and how Twoberts can be shuffled together to support 8-player drafts:

I watch streams to watch a human experience something, so it's a non-negotiable for me.

Getting ready to fly out to #SCGHouston tomorrow- excited to see what the Modern format has to offer! Coverage will be streamed exclusively on YouTube, so that's where you'll want to look for the stream: www.youtube.com/@SCGCoverage

Cumulative upkeep {1} (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

{T}: Put a music counter on target creature. If it doesn’t have “At the beginning of your upkeep, destroy this creature unless you pay {1} for each music counter on it,” it gains that ability.

For sure. I really like the idea of using mono-color cards in a guild module that are somewhat synergistic with a guild, but that also just generally play. Like putting Murmuring Mystic in the Izzet Module for being a spells matter card, and just a card that a lot of blue decks are happy to play.
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
It's an interesting concept for sure. Echoes some of what drafting Ravnica sets entails, which is knowing what three color combinations are possible and how to approach them based on the supported guilds.

One time I found myself playing same deck Legacy Miracles between rounds at an RCQ. I figured out that the game was going to end when somebody drew from the empty deck before my opponent did and just kind of bullied a win. That was it for same deck Brainstorming for me. I got my fill.

I love that people have Dandan. I am literally incapable of absorbing anything about the format.

A match against you is the reason I never want to Cube with Doomsday ever again.
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
And as a result of that complexity, players often don't know what the games are fully about. But a dramatic topdeck? A massive burst of mana on a card that we all understand to be categorically broken? That's a universal language. That stuff is powerful to tap into. There's so much to unpack here.

It's interesting because it overlaps with a few other topics I've had percolating- one being skill expression which I mentioned briefly in my upcoming episode on the Human Module of Spooky Cube. No matter what you do, Magic is so complex so there's always skill expression whether you push it or not

This was the outcome I was expecting knowing it was going to a popular vote, but I did get my hopes up a little when the early voting was close, haha. I appreciate the support!

Thanks, Matt- I appreciate the kind words. I'm grateful that they were willing to take a weird swing, and like to think I made the most of the opportunity. Hopefully someday I'll get that shot again!

It's something I'm still digesting, and is a topic or even multiple episodes worth of topics for me to cover on the podcast. For now, I'm just trying to appreciate that a lot of folks are happy just seeing a Black Lotus in a Cube list. And if they're happy, then there's goodness in that.

I value balanced gameplay really highly when it comes to Cube, and increasingly I find my approach is markedly different from just about everyone regarding Magic and even across other games that I play. I DM differently than my D&D friends. I was often on an island playing Blood on the Clocktower.

"Oh my God it's Lightning Helix!"
The called shot.
The "pen trick" that really was just both players making the plays presented to them.
Even my Spell Pierce is shared as a short clip that removes the huge wind up as my opponent cracked a Wooded Foothills and I had a full minute to think.

I've been listening to a lot of Lucky Paper Radio recently, and there's some really good perspective in this interview with Joe Anderson. Specifically the mention of how so many of the huge tournament stories everyone remembers have nothing to do with tight play.

These events were five rounds, 5-0 gets to play Nationals. Second place or worse gets ostensibly nothing. At 4-0, Tim threw his Sealed Deck in the trash and dropped. "Sometimes you have to remind the cards who shuffles whom."
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
This is a story that I heard second hand many years ago, and one that also stuck with me. The player was Tim Aten, one of the best to ever write about Magic, who would go on to be a Jeopardy contestant. He had traveled to Nationals specifically to try to grind in through a last chance qualifier.

I love the illustrative over prescriptive approach you've been taking. As I absorb more and more about the ways others explore Cube, I find it all the more important to find the commonalities in a space with such a wide range of perspectives.

This article talking about making cube changes was started by a @ryanoverdrive.bsky.social tweet from 2016. The article's been in the works for a while and something that I had a lot to say about it. Enjoy. :)

Much love to everybody who has been enjoying the podcast! Today marks the tenth episode of 180 MTG, and a new record for downloads in one day. It's been fun plugging along with this, and I'm happy seeing the slow and steady growth.
