A stat we don't talk about enough: Newspapers have lost 77% of their jobs over the last 20 year, more than any of the 532 other industries tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This is a cross section of activity (as OP notes, there is so, so much extending into the burbs that cannot fit on one map) but a good start in understanding the current situation
Its so hard to understand the scope and scale of the Federal attack on Chicago, led by ICE and CBP.

I put this map and table together, highlighting the most significant incidents from 9/19-10/25. The area shown is roughly 30 by 35 miles with incidents in all corners.
excuse me the new Springsteen biopic is about the NEBRASKA ERA??

Straight up driving around gassing neighborhoods on a Saturday morning
Border patrol agents deployed tear gas on the 3700 block of North Kildare where residents say a landscape worker, a resident, and a woman on a bike were detained. Video from a resident.

ordinary americans are filming ice agents and trying to save their neighbors. for all the hemming and hawing during 2024 about how democracy was an elite concern, the elites gave up far more quickly than average people.

The picture of this man's lunch on the ground like that is really too much.
In Wrigleyville in Chicago right now—

ICE/CBP has reportedly been targeting laborers in the area all morning. A large number of neighbors are gathered outside a house where agents snatched a man. His lunch is still here on the ground.

Area is clear of feds for now, gas deployed earlier.

I went for a walk in the Discount Mall yesterday after the tear gassing outside. It was empty. A bunch of vendors didn’t even bother showing up. No customers. Security watching a door, keeping others padlocked and only letting people in one by one. The immigration raids are a local recession.
Are the closed bridges downtown still open to pedestrians? Asking for me, currently on a 66 that hasn’t moved in several minutes

Roughly twelve thousand a year. Probably much higher in Chicago. You save about $33 a day for not owning a car.
The longer I don't own a car, the more insane sinking that much money into something seems.

massive, spontaneous community resistance as residents link arms + march ice down the street behind the discount mall in little village and into their cars. "go! leave!"

the crowd erupts as suvs depart. a sea of whistles and cheers. one person yells, "everywhere ice goes, we'll be there!"

We know we sound like a broken record beating the "local reporter" drum and yes plenty of local reporting is copaganda, garbage, etc but we simply promise you that you will find clearer, more accurate information from people in the area vs REDALERTSNEWSGUY20000

If you want to know why I talk so much about meaningful structural changes to municipal revenue it's because in my heart I know we deserve better than what we can afford with airport slot machine change.
Chicago is exploring adding slot machines at O'Hare and Midway airports, with Bally's already identifying a potential location at Midway. The announcement was made Tuesday during the first day of City Council hearings on Mayor Johnson’s proposed budget.
City pursuing the idea of installing slot machines at O'Hare and Midway airports, Council members told
Chief Financial Officer Jill Jaworski made that surprise announcement during the first day of City Council hearings on Mayor Brandon Johnson’s proposed $16.6 billion budget. She said gambling giant Bally's has even picked out a location for slots at Midway Airport.

I know that there are people outside Chicago who are paying attention and seeing these videos but there are no words for how it feels when the videos show everyday places in your neighborhood, places that are part of your routine. The sense of violation is profound.

If you were at #NoKings #NoKingsChicago yesterday & are looking to get more connected to ongoing efforts, I’m gonna share a few things that I frequently recommend to people. The first is obvious & timely, given the state of our city.

(I’ve learned I need to put 🧵 lol yay I’m learning the Internet)

Some folks were worried that they'd sic thugs on the protestors or declare martial law. Instead they posted AI videos and complained.

These people have no juice. Their supporters are cowards. They are are all bark and no bite. They collapse when we push back. Remember that.
