Lots of posts about Chicago, food, music, animals.

Too many posts about GenAI, Courier bots, and Greek Orthodoxy.

Hello to the new folks!
3 months ago I resigned as a Director of IT because I couldn't persuade my org against GenAI use and I stand by it.

GenAI/LLMs are powerful tech but
-They don't work as marketed
-Destroy critical thinking
-Easy to manipulate
-Immense cost
-Main models run by evil companies
This week, I resigned from my position as Director of IT/Tech at an org I truly believed in. I wanted us to stop using Generative AI and was told no.

This thread will explain my decision and why I believe this is a true crisis. I hope ya see this and if you want to chat, + or -, lets do it 1/

NU motivations:

-ensure no interruption to Football ops, including the TV channels that made their own deals

-ensure ExEd has corporate customersnit scared by the admin(also getting a new building

-never deal with a protest like the Gaza encampment

Nothing to do with education
The Trump administration froze approximately $790 million of Northwestern’s funding. Meanwhile, the school is building the most expensive college football stadium ever built, at a cost of $860 million.

Do you see where my problem is here?
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

Northwestern had an atrocious response to the student led Gaza protest. They kept their staff uninformed, campus police assaulted staff, nthey suspended staff, and at the end of the day ground down the protest until they agree to crumbs.

They never want that responsibility again. Cowards.

Future generations will ask of 11/27/2025:

-What did you do when the calls for ethnic cleansing became so clear?

Today I ask a far more pressing question, one whose answer will allow the prior question to be asked:

-What will you do to stop the ethnic cleansing?
A reminder for those who are not aware: "remigration" is the process of deporting all non-white people from a country. It includes citizens and is, by definition, ethnic cleansing.

And to be clear: this is not fake. I just screenshot it myself.

Its really strange watching an ex player break down sports bets.

What specific knowledge does Matt Ryan have on this? He spent his life unable to bet on football but now hes paid to tell me what to bet on?

The sports betting industry is so dumb, how did we let this happen

Let me rate the pain for this incident:

The cut: barely hurt, I've got nice sharp knives.

The saline wash: did i leave the chair to fall to my knees and make them pause? Yes, yes I did.

The lidocaine shot into the finger: for 1 second, I hoped for death
I'm 31, making roasted acorn squash. Gotta get them nice and even, so it's wobbly.

Slice entirely through the tip of my ring finger.

If you are making butternut squash for the first time, and find your hands start peeling aggressively, dont panic.

You are having an allergic reaction that will look insane for hours but revert to normal eventually

This is a great thread that highlights a working theory I have:

I struggle, therefore I am alive.
This *in particular*, my god. I find it hard to map my writing skill, because developing that has been largely an innate progression.

Music? Innate singing only got me so far, and the conscious development of vocal skills, guitar playing and composition has been a joy I cannot express.
Every single actual creative person has experienced the experience of finding effortless what was once effortful.

A generative AI user is completely alienated from this experience, it's alien and unfamiliar to feel pride in the outcome. Or, even to actually give a fuck about it at all.

I say this not in like a “actually it’s not technically an AR-15 hur hur hur” way but because conflating a bunch of different technologies and (especially) applications as a single thing is a lot of how e.g. openai positions its “can’t stand in the way of progress gotta let us do whatever”
I sorta wonder if people even know that text generation, image generation and video generation are all using different models that only have a little bit to do with each other
I think we need to disambiguate where we can bc Altman and the genAI cheerleaders are *encouraging* this confusion. It's in their best interests to be able to say to people, all of these other things you use every day, *those* are AI, you like those right? You're already using AI! Have some more!

Life is struggle. Some things we struggle against, others we struggle for. The latter is what makes us truly alive, those struggles give us purpose.

Find your struggle, whatever it may be.
