NVIDIA Has Sold Over $200 Billion In AI-Focused GPUs, And Nobody Is Making A Profit Using Them (Which Is CRAZY!), Which Means That Eventually They Will Stop Buying Them This is a fairly simple point, and also one that makes me scream a little. Our stock market is built on the back of selling billions of dollars of GPUs, and nobody is making a profit using them. The services powered by GPUs are unprofitable, and it appears that renting out GPUs to run those services is unprofitable too. The Information reported Oracle’s gross margins on renting GPUs back in October, with H100s having a 26% gross margin , H200s 19%, A100s 9%, NVIDIA’s GB200 racks -100%, and B200 Chips -200%, and yes, those are negatives. You may also think that “26% gross margin” means that Oracle is making a profit, and you’d be wrong! All that means is that after removing the cost of goods sold (the power consumption of the rack itself, cooling, connection between GPUs, networking, and so on) you’re left with 26 cents of “profit.” The problem here is that only that amount starts going toward the actual cost of buying these things — the cost of the GPU, the debt, the construction costs for the data center, and so on. These margins also include “most” depreciation expenses, though it’s unclear what that actually means. Depreciation is something I explained a few weeks ago in detail — where a company spreads the ongoing cost of a GPU across its useful years, which in turn eats away at any revenues that said GPU might generate. In any case, even with depreciation expenses, Oracle’s Blackwell GPUs have negative 100%+ margins. These are NVIDIA’s most expensive, most power-intensive GPUs, and Oracle is buying $40 billion worth of NVIDIA’s GB200 racks to fill OpenAI’s Stargate Abilene data center as part of its $300 billion cloud compute deal. But even the non-Blackwell GPUs have pathetic margins, especially as they’re in vast, expensive data centers with massive amounts of hardware to handle power and data and networking and the staff tasked with maintenance. The problem only compounds when you realize that everybody has H100 and A100 GPUs, meaning that the thin (26 cents and 9 cents respectively) margins make it hard to stomach future discounts that might be necessary as these GPUs age.

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Mamdani created shame the same way he created vision: by having standards, and then showing everyone what his standards are, and then proving that he truly held those standards by standing for something without shame. There is a massive power in standing for something that you'll never get by standing for whatever the most recent polls show. It's an attraction. It moves the lines of ought-to-be. It defines what is shameful by showing what is inspiring. It creates someplace else for people who have chosen shameful identities to go, if they so choose.

But more people should be more ashamed, I think. It seems to me that this death of shame is a big part of how we've arrived here. It's pretty shameful to be OK with Nazism. It's pretty shameful to belong to a Nazi party. It's pretty shameful to live in a Nazi country. It's pretty shameful to lavish yourself with opulence while you're ensuring that millions starve and suffer. Maybe it has occurred to you, as it did to me, that the actual reason Maple Valley Township is divided over this Nazi in their midst not only because some people there are opposed to Nazism, but also, crucially, because a lot of people there are just fine with it. Like their Treasurer, they claim to not know about everything that is happening, and then go tra-la-la down the road, unless you force them to contend with it, in which case they inform you that their support of it is your fault for making them feel so irredeemable and condemned about it that they feel compelled to support it, and having shifted the burden of culpability from themselves to you, once again tra-la-la down the road they go.

while i appreciate @404media.co explaining this, if you ever find yourself explaining to someone why smart glasses recording people is different from a smartphone, i think you have to consider that they're playing with you, and you're playing back in turn.
There are two things Meta’s glasses have in common with Google Glass which also make it meaningfully different from an iPhone. The first is that the iPhone might not have a recording light, but in order to record something or take a picture, a user has to take it out of their pocket and hold it out, an awkward gesture all of us have come to recognize in the almost two decades since the launch of the first iPhone. It is an unmistakable signal that someone is recording. That is not the case with Meta’s glasses, which are meant to be worn as a normal pair of glasses, and are always pointing at something or someone if you see someone wearing them in public.
