I have POTS. there is not nearly enough seating, covered or not, because society hates homeless people.
Every urbanist needs a close friend who navigates the city in a wheelchair/w mobility challenges & a friend who does city life w small children & a friend who does it living w age-related challenges. Understanding these perspectives is vital. If we built for these, it would work for nearly everyone.

@bmj.com, a renowned health journal, slams car bloat:

"Cars are becoming steadily larger, [and] with this comes potential harms to health...Action is needed locally, nationally, and internationally to curb sales of new SUVs and to reduce their presence in urban areas."

Protected cycle tracks are not just for cyclists, they allow more freedom for those with mobility issues
We forget that advocacy is really marketing & converting people to our team. The emotional experience of the listener is paramount.
Zohran won at least in part due to running a campaign that was fun/enjoyable.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that a big piece of Mamdani’s campaign was simply “cities are cool and lots of people enjoy living in them” which in and of itself dismantles alot of rightwing talking points

when AOC won, her worn out campaign walking shoes were a symbol of a new kind of commitment to meeting people where they're at. feels like Zohran took that lesson and dialed it up several notches and it worked. so few Dems really take the time to turn regular people into voters

This one of many reasons that 21st century liberalism should reorient itself around *places*, namely creating places that are actually pleasant to live in, with generous public spaces that bring people's physical bodies into proximity.

Americans are now spending more time alone than ever. It’s changing our personalities, our politics, and even our relationship to reality.

A better world is possible
According to the City of Paris, in the last 10 years 150K trees have been planted & 45ha of parks created in the already hot city, all intended to not only improve quality-of-life today, but also help the city adapt to & manage summer heatwaves of 50℃ (122F) by 2050.

Just the start.

Common sense.

Having AI crammed down our throats is bullshit, but machine learning has some real uses in science. This awesome page shows experimental cyclone track forecasts from Google DeepMind and Google Research's AI weather models, along with forecasts from ECMWF. 😍

Did this trip for the 3rd time today and I love it so much. It feels like a bit of faff to load/unload my wheelchair to go for a short stroll, but it’s also nothing compared to the headache of driving downtown and looking for parking.
I love my mobility options!
One of my first tweets as bike mayor was about how my bike is my mobility aid. Some old crank replied that I can’t be disabled if I ride a bike. Anyway, I achieved peak mobility aid today when I transported my electric wheelchair on my e-trike so I could *finally* enjoy Halifax’s Public Gardens.

what's interesting about this is that it serves the same purpose as trump's rallies — energizing potential supporters and interested people, creating a positive vibe that builds an affective relationship — but is so much more democratic in that it is participatory

Want a happy city? Build for bikes.

So pleased to see Minneapolis continuing to be on this list & can personally confirm: I am happier here than anywhere I've ever lived.

And a huge factor in that is my ability to live a less car dependent life with my family.
The Happiest Cities in the World are Also the Most Bicycle Friendly
The 2025 Happy City Index is in and the world's happiest cities are also some of the best places to ride a bike.

“A growing number of scientists believe the SARS-CoV-2 virus may be subtly altering our immune systems. If correct, their hypothesis will change how we understand everything from RSV to shingles to sepsis.”

“It’s certainly impacting our immune health & probably.. overall health”

Oh hey it turns out another thing Covid cautious people have been saying nonstop for several years is true: lockdowns did not cause “immunity debt,” and Covid infections DO cause immune disruptions that make you more vulnerable to other illnesses.

"Urban planners basically design subsidies for drunk drivers" is a hell of a message about our crap land use, and I'm 100% here for it.
This week at Fingers, I interviewed @resnikoff.bsky.social on the perverse relationship between parking minimums and drunk-driving, and why it's imperative to integrate bars and restaurants into broader conversation about housing density, zoning, etc.

I'm regularly blown away with how powerfully therapeutic good physical space design can be. Especially when an entire commute & physical environment can be filled with proportions, materials, greenery, sound & safety features that leave people feeling a soul-level happiness.
I'll never get sick of this scene on my bike commute. Love the amazing construction of the Improvement Arches & with all the rain we've had this year things are so lush & green.
Funny to think about how a few hundred yards away people are sitting in traffic on the interstate. I'll take this any day.

Folks are terrified of the NYC subway, think DC is a gang ridden hellscape and have other often irrational fears, but here's the truth, other than disease or an abusive partner with a gun, you're most likely to be killed by a reckless driver, and we barely acknowledge it's a problem.

The pair was treated for minor injuries.
We found that after banning rule breakers, about 95% of moderating tasks evaporated. Most Alexandrians we found to be remarkably conscientious ppl who want to participate in thoughtful discussion about creating a productive/functional community for all. It's important to facilitate that w/ structure
After managing online groups w thousands of Alx parents, we found that about 1% of participants would belligerently break rules, try to stir up conflict, theorize abt off-the-rails nonsense & we discovered that if we didn't follow through on banning them -regular, kind, sensible ppl would leave
