What could a mentally healthier internet look like?

If we designed digital boundaries inspired by Nickelodeon we could implement one or more of the following:

- Balanced youth agency with meaningful messaging
- Digital health tools for content classification
- Avoided forceful tones or all-or-nothing means of banning content

Two ideas I have for healthy digital boundaries are the following:
- A unified Day of Play across all child-centered media platforms that encourages play (inside or outside). Currently, only Nickelodeon recognizes WorldWide Day of Play through a pause on their content

- A step count or 30 minute exercise incentive. For example, the Instagram app locks until the user reaches 3,000 steps (~30 min of movement) or alternative exercises like stretching, standing, to meet a movement quota

**Ideas are creative, unresearched concepts meant to explore possibilities**

To summarize, digital detoxes don't have to mean digital punishment. There is room to design platforms and or build app features that support wellbeing without being limiting.

Nickelodeon laid a promising foundation, and we can elevate their impact.

Page on the gravity of screen time vs playtime amongst youth 8-18. With more access to devices in and outside the classroom, children spend about 7.5 hours per day on screens. With more screentime, children become more sedentary and engage in less playtime.

Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play is an annual 3 hour show blackout usually during the start of the school year (September). Did it always work?

Some changed the channel, and some took a break.

But it gave a reason to change behavior!

Today's digital boundaries are different. Social media policies often range from feeling paternalistic (e.g., the UK Online Safety Act and Age verifiers) to hands-off (Meta removing fact-checkers while hate speech spreads).

We need alternatives that guide users to healthy choices and prioritize agency over shame.

I know it's frustrating when lawyers point out when something the administration is doing is not legal. But responding with "the law doesn't matter anymore" is really unhelpful and defeatist. Clarifying the law is important because it reminds us not to comply in advance and to resist and take action

There is a lot of focus on Tylenol and autism spectrum disorder today, but RFK Jr. is also suggesting that low folate levels contribute.

First, a reminder that genetics are the overwhelming contributor to ASD—up to 90%.

Anything else he pulls out is likely to have minimal impact on ASD rates.
