Brian was very much involved in the 1996 stereo mixes with Mark Linett, per the Wikipedia. That mix would form the basis for Giles Martin’s Atmos mix.

It’s kinda surprising that there wasn’t a half-assed stereo mix from the ‘60s, like with The Beatles’ earlier albums.

I have no clue as to its provenance. I guess it maybe came from dialog recording during the ROTS sessions, only to be misplaced during the DVD’s mixing process?

I think so, especially since it was simultaneous with ROTS’ production and needed to fit inside those deadlines. Like, the Emperor scene BTS was on the ROTS’ DVD picture gallery.

Fan editors have used newer Temura takes on the ESB lines to excellent effect.

Speaking of controversial changes, I genuinely like all the DVD ones. I just wish they got Temura in an actual studio to record his lines (not over the phone) and did a proper shoot of Hayden as ghost Anakin (not a head on Shaw’s body).

Good ideas, but could have had better executions.

Like, I wish the OOT was officially-available, but I much prefer the SE when it comes to the cloud city windows, the redone mattes (e.g., the wide shot in ANH’s ending), and doing a good 5.1 mix.

I just wish they redid the music edits as well - digital instead of analog.

Exactly!

There’s nothing that you can really pinpoint (or follow the development of), from The Duellists to Gladiator 2, that screams “Ridley Scott.”

It’s all attributable to a mix (in his specific case) of what writer, production designer, and cinematographer he’s working with on a given project

Hence my constant ire that Scott insists he was the driving creative force that singularly made Alien, and not it being an amalgam of talented people that made an amazing vision. You barely have anything worthwhile without Dan O'Bannon or HR Giger.

Sometimes I find the commercial history of a work more fascinating than the artistic merits of the auteur’s vision, but that’s just me

And frankly I don’t care about auteurism snobbery being used as a way to deflect serious examinations and preservation of truncated or modified works

The thing about films having alternate cuts or endings is that if you like the film, you also have the privilege of being able to try a different flavor. Kill the canon purist in your mind and instead adopt a Wow Two Cakes mentality. If you don't like it, then examine why a version didn't please you

I've said it before and I'll say it again: every movie that has 2 or more versions that have been in the public eye needs all those versions available on disc or streaming. Like the Blade Runner example -- the set with ALL the diferent cuts on blu-ray? Gold standard. Do that for everything.
