Some nice flourishes like the biker stopping for a piss and getting his lad ripped off and the chess piece interaction but Night of the Demon (Wesson, 1980) is a tremendously bad film that proves Kurosawa’s point about it being impossible to make a good one from a gash script*

I've got another book coming out next year so I have quite a strong practical interest in understanding *why* Municipal Gothic is outselling Intervals of Darkness. I think it's that, Sgt. Pepper style, Municipal Gothic feels as if it will have a more consistent theme and mood.

You may, now that my official birthday has passed, commence with Christmas decorations and music*

*to note, I have demonstrated generous flexibility here, removing the former decree that Christmas should only begin after St Andrew’s Day

Safety inspector: I found two major issues with your Death Star. For one thing, there are no railings.

Grand Moff Tarkin: We believe railings would detract from the austerity of our bottomless chasms.

Safety inspector: That brings us to my second issue.

You may, if you feel so inclined, wish me a happy birthday

You really shouldn’t have needed prompting, though. Do you not honour the gods in your household?

25 years since first watching it and Deliverance (Boorman, 1972) is still so captivating and nerve-wracking

Of course it centres around *that* horrific scene but it’s run through with tough questions around confused masculinity, man’s abusive relationship with nature and complexity of justice

When I was in the depths of postpartum depression, I read posts on Reddit compulsively, usually from women who were as unwell as I was. It bolstered my negative thoughts. Yes, life WAS ruined. Yes, there WAS no way out of this.

I can imagine how much worse things would be if I used ChatGPT.

Some terrific jump scares and technical wizardry but I was hoping to feel more enamoured of House on Haunted Hill (Castle, 1959)

A very good film, of course, but a bit too murder mystery for my tastes
