I‘m a firm believer in gentlemanly play, but “After the Play, Unsportsmanlike Conduct on Both Teams” is one of my favorite ref calls

"Surely a quick, violent, successful war of aggression is just what the ruler needs to shore up his legitimacy," said just about every failed monarch in history shortly before invading Serbia.
Creating a military conflict with Venezuela gives this administration a legal "hook" to invoke the Alien Enemies Act. In other words, the foreign war is being manufactured in order to facilitate court deference for its domestic mass deportation policy. It's a Stephen Miller Special.

part of the reason i am genuinely irritated with the gAI/AGI cult is because there is real societal benefits in using ML techniques in medical care + weather analysis, and instead people get annoyed with anything that gets lumped in with the plagiarism machine
We could save soooo many lives but people are so caught up in their reactionary moral panic nonsense

If Netflix fed me more of what I have watched, that would be an improvement. Instead you just get everyone’s #1.

I do not want to watch The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and you can’t make me
Now "browsing" means Netflix compiles your recent watch history and feeds you more of the exact same thing. Or Amazon analyzes your buy history and gives you a list of 15 books with basically the same title. You rarely stumble upon something new or different by chance. It's eroding our curiosity.

Just in case you're wondering , this is considerably worse than what Trump did you get impeached the first time.
At some point in the future, Witkoff should be prosecuted for this.

They support Trump for the very reasons I hold them in contempt if Trump never existed I'd still deplore them.
So one of my political sins that I know I should get over is that I do have the problem of holding Trump's base in contempt and looking down on them, and part of it is that my image of who they are is heavily informed by the one MAGA guy who shows up regularly on my FB feed; I'll call him J.

Everything he is saying here, on its own terms, would be a bright-line crime if done to the survivors of an enemy navy's ship you just sank in a real war.

On top of everything else, the deterrence isn’t deterring. If it were, we wouldn’t keep “having” to do this
Hey yeah we got the most impressive weapon systems in history of the world that can target a button on your coat from 1500 miles and we're gonna kill a random dude hugging a raft with like 3 million dollars and do it twice.

What the fuck are we doing here.

What the fuck are we doing.

Ordering no quarter, as Hegseth effectively did, isn't a newfangled modern war crime. It was understood as a crime as far back as the Revolutionary War. Washington threatened to do reprisals over it. The bad guy in 'The Patriot' is (very loosely) based off a British officer who was notorious for it.

To be explicit, we executed a German U-Boat commander who said he had to sink lifesaving gear / “inadvertently” kill survivors because it might give away his position, thereby potentially resulting in the loss of his submarine.

We executed multiple members of that crew.
Heinz-Wilhelm Eck might have something to say about this one.

This would be an unambiguous war crime even in a proper war against a real enemy’s navy.
Textbook war crime/extrajudicial killing

Hegseth order on first Caribbean boat strike, officials say: Kill them all
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order to kill all crew members in the Sept. 2 strike on a suspected drug boat. Navy SEALs fired a second missile.

This is my yearly reminder that

A) The Pilgrims never turned on the Wampanoags. The Puritans who did were a whole different group of people.

B) Thanksgiving became a holiday to celebrate whooping the Confederates.

Sometimes we can just enjoy traditions without guilt!
Thanksgiving is problematic. Giving thanks is not. As someone who wants to remember the attempted genocide of indigenous people but also likes a reminder to practice gratitude, I like to use Indigenous People's Month to support (and be grateful for) indigenous creators. A partial list! /1
