Machine learning in my field:
-does this wiggle match approximately wiggle from a known earthquake or is it from some other source?
-does this receiver function meet a particular set of "good" receiver functions?

Basically an advanced form of template matching.

TIL that a curfew is also a literal object! the word has its roots in the French couvrefeu - "cover fire" - and was used to denote a bell rung to warn people to cover their fires overnight to prevent the outbreak of flames between wooden houses. a curfew was a bell-shaped cover for embers!

This is deeply charming, and at a moment in which the rest of the internet feels full of dread and misery, you might need this little pick me up in which the next mayor of Seattle describes herself as “dumpy” and goes to Goodwill for a new wardrobe
A lot of people have been calling me the

Please more transparency like this.
Yesterday, Google released a new report estimating the environmental footprint per Gemini query.

That's very welcome, as lack of any transparency from big tech companies has been a big problem. I hope others follow suit.

I wrote about on this on Substack: hannahritchie.substack.com/p/ai-footpri...
What's the carbon footprint of using ChatGPT or Gemini? [August 2025 update]
A new study from Google suggests its Gemini LLM uses around 0.24 Wh per text query. That's the same energy as using a microwave for one second.
