Hello #Portfolioday 🌼
I'm an oil painter inspired by nature, and I especially like painting animals and plants. I have a wildlife biology degree and enjoy detailed work. I sell originals and prints and am interested in illustration!

An 11x14" oil painting of a mossy forest, viewed from the shadow of a large tree. Painting of a bighorn sheep perched at the edge of a cliff overlooking a vast canyon landscape. Painted turtle sunning itself on a worn branch in the middle of a swamp. Hare hiding in the undergrowth surrounded by detailed foliage.

yeah for some reason the name osmanthus is so ubiquitous in english literature that even chinese-born/raised authors use it over whichever native name the story is set in. it's so baffling to me

i'm wondering how well-known osmanthus tree even is to english speakers? if people had to google "osmanthus" as often as "gui", i feel like the second name is less immersion-breaking.

i don't typically complain about anachronism but not gonna lie i'm somewhat bothered by how ubiquitous the greek "osmanthus" and "chrysanthemum" are in fantasy stories set in pre-1700s china.

i think "osmanthus" just sounds so foreign to my asian ass brain. it haunts me.

it's interesting how languages adopt plant/animal names from various different sources. some get local translations, some get butchered hard, some get accepted as is.

feels like each name has its own, long history on how it got to the other side of the planet.
