in all seriousness, when viewing it the first time it legitimately felt to me like Sam was pointing at a bank transaction - and specifically a mortgage one at that - and saying "this is what is wrong with the world" and then torturing that impulse for 90 minutes for catharsis

I see what you're saying. I think at the time it felt to me like it was meant to reflect the perspective of the young white relatively entitled protag. The antagonist's age is also catoonishly exaggerated in contrast to the main character's youth and beauty

So the context was that it was one year after the economy completely crashed due to the runaway greed of huge banking companies and that informed my perspective when I saw it in the theater.

So like the focus was on how much the protagonist sucks. She is encouraged to turn off her empathy
