Community Planning Masters Student Vancouver + Vancouver Island ❤ housing policy Is it a public transit trip if it doesn't include a BC Ferry?
Posts Media Videos Starter Packs
I'm convinced that most people over 50 doesn't understand that literally everyone under 35 has horrible experiences with finding housing. I don't think they understand HOW bad it is
"housing is a human right" falls under the we need more housing category, and zoning falls under the "that doesn't fit our vibe" category. They're totally unrelated!
Every time a municipality realizes their housing policy actually works they go "oh shit" and immediately try and reverse it
Vancouver's budget for VZ infrastructure is so sad. I think Victoria has built more bike lanes every year for the past 5+ years with like 1/6th of the population. Budget cuts will make this so much worse
I'm starting to think we actually aren't trying to build more housing
Burnaby is deciding to curb their SSMU bylaw because too much housing is being built

Is it really democracy when the people don't get what they voted for in any real, material sense?
Newfoundland and Labrador’s election shows the problem again. A party can win a majority of seats without majority support.

Proportional representation would make every vote count equally and ensure real majority rule.
Two pie charts compare votes and seats in Newfoundland and Labrador’s election. The left chart shows the popular vote: PCs 44.5%, Liberals 43.7%, NDP 8.4%, Independents 3.9%. The right chart shows seat share: PCs 52.5%, Liberals 37.5%, NDP 5%, Independents 5%. The graphic highlights how first past the post gave the PCs a majority of seats despite not having majority voter support, with a message calling for proportional representation.
And being completely unwilling to increase property taxes to fund those public amenities
vancouver planning in the 21st century is developers and the city patting themselves on the back for a sustainable mixed-used community that pays homage to the industrial past while using modern best practices where a two bedroom condo costs a million dollars and there are no schools
cool, awesome, inspiring, just one question where are the schools or buses or community centres

But it would also credibly signal that we're prepared to deprioritize cars to the extent that's required to make the most out of a billion-dollar train, something I think any prudent provincial or federal government would want to see 3/3

What kind of cop is ok with a criminal mayor but will quit over a social democrat mayor?

Ya, I know the answer too.
Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”
I'm not familiar with this plan but I can bet that "within walking distance" actually just means directly on the arterial road
@nerd4cities.bsky.social I'm sure you've done an episode on something similar, but this seems up your alley!

this just happens to be the belief in every area, capitalist ideology that allows you to banish anyone from humanity if they can't pay the rent and you don't have to care

every town and city in Canada and the United States, people believe this

faith
This lines up with how part of the issue in helping unhoused/homeless people in my area is that they can be viewed as interlopers or somehow not legitimate residents and so ideally forced to go be in some other city or region.

The term "unhoused" can help address public opinion in that regard.

What we say vs what we do

Say
🌎 Climate crisis: we need to rapidly decarbonize
🏘️ Housing crisis: we need more and cheaper housing

Do
🌎 Climate crisis: let’s put 154% tariff on cheap solar and 100% on cheap EVs
🏘️ Housing crisis: Let’s heavily restrict multifamily housing and tax it like it’s a sin
I first read that as 15.4%. Holy moly, we really don’t want solar in Canada.
So if I understand this correctly - Because Vancouver has created zones that theoretically allow multiplexes, instead of having defaultish SFH zoning, this doesn't apply to them? It would only apply if they had original SFH zoning that had been updated to align with multiplexes?
I'm so ready for the Park Board x Bitcoin Election! (I'm not ready)
The pocket of low-rise at the top right of your image is also very silly.
You're probably looking at the Jericho Lands future development by the local first nations. It's development plan was approved this year, so it's been included. The UBC skytrain extension will pass through the development. When that eventually happens there will be a similar corridor of land use
Nanaimo has a huge primary healthcare deficit - This article states 20,000 without a family doctor. The south end has like one walk-in clinic. Council choosing not to support additional healthcare because they worry it will only be used by the unhoused is insane.

Eby repealed a carbon tax that had been working in BC for almost 2 decades in order to make gas a bit cheaper, and handed out $410 million to drivers for basically no reason. And now there's no money for active transport grants. 300 people a year are killed in BC in motor vehicle crashes.

Interesting presser today with Premier David Eby, who seems to be hitting his rhetorical stride in response to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's push for the feds to prioritize a new pipeline through BC to the north coast
#bcpoli
“If Alberta gets a $50 billion publicly funded pipeline, then I want a $50 billion federal guarantee for projects in British Columbia as well. And I want $50 billion for every province across Canada and every territory, because their projects are just as damn important as Alberta’s pipeline is.”

I don't mind curves for a living room, but for almost every other space it results in badly shaped rooms
