... But that difference also means an AGI mind would just be so alien in terms of its relationship with the time and physicality that I'm not sure we'd recognize it if it existed? And as a thought experiment I wonder if the the same would be true about an emergent "societal mind".

It's an interesting contrast. What role does embodiment have? A hypothetical AGI model exists as an architectural is conceptual and mathematical that could be realized on whatever substrate can crunch the numbers. It seems undeniable dualistic. The human mind is not, as far as we can prove.

I do find it interesting that we evaluate computer model cognition at the interconnected core/data-center level, but not human cognition. You can make human-cognition-with-unbounded-energy! It's called a society! But there's a phase shift there that causes new constraints to dominate.

Relatedly I found this graph on some tech progress for computers, just to show how things don't always just go up forever necessarily.

To be fair I think that Trump would take a UK-style "largely ceremonial head of state with official if perfunctory oaths of fealty generous holdings and stipend" deal in a heartbeat, so in this *specific* instance the "no kings" part is actually important vs decrying general executive overreach.

this is fascinating. It's like they're doing the physics meme!

Sure, I mean *gestures broadly at the entire Russian economy since 2022*

I think the efficacy is somewhere between "iron clad lockdown" and "literally does nothing". The friction restrictions could impose is probably substantial, depending on how motivated the state is to investigate and enforce.

I have to imagine that, due to the nature of the business, provence and chain of custody for certifying repair parts is pretty important. You're not buying knock off turbine blades off the grey market

Problem is it literally doesn't matter... You either choose to stand on this and risk fighting the messaging battle, or you demure in search of more favorable terrain and cede the entire war for the legitimacy of constitutional checks on power.

Path tracing can handle this algorithmically but the problem is that it would take an impractical number of rays to evaluate without a ton of noise. Specular-Specular paths (like caustics) are very hard to importance sample effectively. Bidirectional techniques can help, but aren't used in RT yet.

Thank you!

What about the Supremacy Clause? Can state police intervene in the execution of federal duties (even if that execution is questionable)? I assume there's good precedent there.
nathanhoobler.bsky.social
How does qualified immunity factor into that?

This is, like, Aphex Twins entire *thing* right? Certainly Autechre. Aesthetically you could probably trace it back to procedural visual artists like some of Jackson Pollock's work, or various forms of "Pop Art" in the other direction.

My absolutely favorite paper in this space I recommend to anyone working on reconstruction or inverse tasks (or even any machine learning): arxiv.org/abs/1711.06077 "Perception-Distortion Tradeoff". Goes beyond quantifying the error/distortion of the reconstruction statistically, 2/

Makes perfect sense. I avoid TikTok because (a) I'm not putting the app on my phone and (b) I've found short form video to be a pretty poisonous thing for me personally, but I really enjoy his YT content

I'm curious what platform(s) you do find most useful and why, if you have the time.

As far as I can tell, yeah. You'd want to ensure the grafted part doesn't root, or you're missing the whole point of the graft.

I got tired of mashing together tools to write long threads with 𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 and ℳα†ℏ—so I wrote La𝑇𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑡!

It converts Markdown and LaTeX to Unicode that can be used in “tweets”, and automatically splits long threads. Try it out!

Ironically Pathfinder 2e feels a lot like 4e v2, just like original Pathfinder was an extension of 3.5e

I've got a new blog post for all of you fine folks! It runs through the additions to D3D12 since it was released, and finishes up with some of the things that have changed for me personally in my code.

(And yes it's really been 10 years 👴).

Ten Years of D3D12
For those of us that have been using it from the start, it can be hard to believe that Direct3D 12 has been around for nearly ten years now. Windows 10 was released on July 29th 2015, and D3D12 has be...

I am boycotting #SIGGRAPHAsia 2026 because it will be in Malaysia, where there are serious safety concerns for the LGBTQ+ members of our community, thereby excluding them. I will not attend, submit my work to, or perform any reviews for SIGGRAPH Asia 2026.

Yet, I'm excited about #SIGGRAPHAsia 2025!
