Mendar stood silently for a moment. María momentarily thought she had perhaps gotten through. Then he raised his phase pistol. "Just fix the engines."

She inserted some commands into the terminal. "The fuel inlet servos need to be reset. This will take a moment."

He turned away.

She turned to him. "I do understand." She opened the top of her uniform's zipper to reveal her crucifix. "You have no idea who this is or what this symbolizes."

"I'm guessing it's a false god."

"If you don't mind me asking, what makes them heretics?"

"They refuse to acknowledge that it took nine days to create the Chosen Realm."

María accessed the terminal. As she began to enter commands, she saw a text display in the corner. "Delay them as long as you can."

She gave a small grin as she realized who must have sent it. Then she cleared it and got back to work.

"You're young, Mendar. And you're the chief engineer?"

The man nodded to the guards.

"Mendar, you can't."

"We need her help if we're going to rejoin the fight. Or do you want to tell D'Jamat that we can't get warp power?"

The guards relented.

Biting her lip, she walked over to the man who was overseeing the reactor. "You wanted to see me?"

The man, no older than twenty, turned to her. "Yes. This warp drive is far more advanced than anything I've seen. There's a problem in the injectors and I can't lock it down."
