Freelance entertainment journalist. Going through it. I've been to Prague.
Harvey Pekar contributed more to this world than either of you assholes could ever hope to muster. He was a brilliant writer who plugged away at his Cleveland VA job, battled cancer *multiple times* and raised a beautiful family. He was an anti-establishment icon. Fuck all the way off.

Some bad news. The great film and culture writer Nathan Rabin was in a serious car accident. He is expected to recover, but he has a rough path ahead. Now is a great time to buy his new book (I just did, looks cool!) - a thorough investigation of movies about movies.

THE INVENTION OF LOVE in 2001. Lovely production with actors who could make his dialogue sing. I'll cherish that forever.
The first playwright I properly studied (after Shakespeare) was Tom Stoppard. When I went to New York the first thing I did was buy a ticket to Leopoldstadt on Broadway, unable to believe that you could simply go see a new work from an old master. It was glorious. Vale to one of the all-time greats.

I cannot bring myself to refer to Tom Stoppard in the past tense. He is my favorite writer, and that will never change. "The procession is very long and life is very short. We die on the march. But there is nothing outside the march so nothing can be lost to it." Godspeed, sir.

Mini-thread.
Sarah Beckstrom's ex-boyfriend told NBC News she dreamed of becoming an FBI special agent.

She didn't want to deploy to D.C.

"She hated it. She cried about it."

But she started visiting monuments and museums and started enjoying it.

May she rest in peace.

This is heinous.
TRUMP: If you look at Somalia, they are taking over Minnesota.

REPORTER: What do the Somalians have to do with this Afghan guy who shot the National Guard members?

TRUMP: Ah, nothing. But Somalians have caused a lot of trouble. They're ripping us off.

It's easy to be numb because it's par for the course nowadays, but repeatedly calling a reporter who asks a reasonable question "stupid" is conduct unbecoming for a small-town mayor, let alone the President of the United States.

The press exists to play a watchdog role, not be a supplicant.
“You’re a stupid person” — Trump lashes out at a reporter who presses him on the fact that the suspected DC shooter was actually thoroughly vetted before he was let in the US from Afghanistan

The NYT never faced a serious reckoning for Judith Miller's misdeeds, which played a huge role in getting hundreds of thousands of people killed. There is no higher journalistic power that will hold Nuzzi and her ilk accountable. There's only us. And I fear we're just screaming into the void.
I hope that this doesn't just become about "Nuzzi is bad" but fosters a wider recognition that our culture of political journalism that didn't just tolerate her, but promoted and celebrated her even after the allegations were known, is rotten to the core and has been for a long time.
this was bad before, but these are the most troubling and serious allegations you can make about a journalist. if they’re true, i genuinely can’t think of a worse scandal in the history of political journalism. devastating to our industry, to public trust as a whole, and to everyone in its orbit
