Hark! A new pinned post.

I’m Jacques. I’m an academic, cosplayer, Lolita fashion enthusiast, and sometimes writer & photographer based out of Lower Manhattan.

I’m old enough to remember when this happened with the Tories and thus cannot possibly be surprised.

Manosphere lead heads are pussies. You should get lead poisoning properly, the way God intended—

By wearing a dead Japanese rocker’s necklace for two years straight until the string is tangled together so you can’t take it off and the coating is worn down. Slow exposure is best exposure.

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

I appreciate how much New Yorkers do not care for this sketchy AI necklace.
An ad in a subway station for a round pendant necklace called “Friend.” Someone has used a black sharpie to x it out and write “dangerous & wrong” and add the words “not your” in front of “friend.com” An ad in a subway station for a round pendant necklace called “Friend.” Someone has used a black sharpie to scribble over the text in the ad and write “AI slop” above the image of the necklace

Palestine should be free. Trans people should be protected. No one should go into debt to afford housing, healthcare, or an education. It is urgent that we prioritize addressing climate change. Billionaires should not exist. Our government is fascist.

None of these views are extreme.

I’ve made jokes that when I finish the Ryuichi Kumagoro kigu look, I will never wear anything else. And that’s partially because I can tell it’s gonna be really good for just walking a con floor and I prefer those these days.

But yeah I uh. Not every costume is meant for every part of a con.
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
Sapphire? Yeah sure. The hat can be a little annoying. I maybe wouldn’t want to be running around NYCC with it for a full day? But I’ve got full range of motion, I can see decently, and I’m able to move on my own without a handler reasonably quickly.

Honey remains perfect for busy events.
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
But also I do think we should have a conversation about what is reasonable and polite to wear on the floor of bigger cons vs smaller cons and when you save a costume for a contest or just photoshoots.

I’m not wearing D outside of a contest, for example. And that’s always been the case.
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
My most Draconian opinion is that people who ask for photos in like, row 1200 of the show floor at 3pm on Saturday deserve death. My second most Draconian opinion is that a cosplayer who stops to take that photo deserves to have their badge revoked. These are (mostly) jokes.
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
It’s not for NYCC. At least not during the day on the show floor. Don’t be rude to your fellow attendees and become a congestion issue!

But also yeah it’s gonna get damaged cause NYCC just isn’t the space for it.
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
Expect a glue gun and some needles and thread for hand repairs. If you need more than that, the costume wasn’t workable on the floor and you’re not gonna get it there yourself on site at the con.

But also! If your costume is so big you don’t have full range of movement and can’t see to move?
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
I’m seeing a fair amount of grousing about Cosplay Central being a little lack luster this year. But also someone is expecting them to have like, full repair stations with specialty glues and sandpaper and babyyyyy. No.
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
I think my unpopular NYCC cosplay opinion is that if your costume can’t navigate a very full show floor without getting damaged or in the way, it’s not a costume you should plan to wear on the show floor.

I don’t mean you shouldn’t make it! But maybe it’s more for a contest or shoot!
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
Me too. I want nothing more than to be a minor character in CLAMP School Detectives.

and reselling it on English-speaking secondhand platforms for $$$ when it would’ve been max ¥5000 retail. And then folks acting like Liz Lisa is somehow a more luxury ready-to-wear brand on the level with vintage Jane Marple or something.
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
Aestheticized and can have very little to do with what Axes Femme looks like, be applied to non-Axes Femme pieces, etc.

There’s also a cottage industry right now of folks who are a bit more in the know buying cheap Axes Femme and Liz Lisa pieces, sticking a bunch of “shoujo girl” hashtags on it
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
I’m also old but I make an effort to keep involved in more youthful spaces as this helps with comm moderation. A lot of miscommunications often boil down to younger wearers using different terms cause they don’t know the proper term.

Yeah I’ve also seen Axes Femme used on Mercari but it’s

If you like Cabaret, I’d also recommend RENT (there’s a film, it’s okay) and Pippin. I think the revival recording of Pippin is pretty awesome but the original cast has some great vintage charm as well. There’s also a film of the original (or close to it) production.

Like there is a Cardassian engineer lady who thinks O’Brien being hostile to her is flirting because that is flirting in their culture.
So got me wondering is the standard romance novel in cardassia enemies to lovers?

Which is interesting since we do have plus size creators active on the same platforms posting about Lolita, gyaru, himekaji, jirai, decora, etc.

It comes off as part of the aesthetic itself being about body type rather that purely clothes.
mllejacquesnoel.bsky.social
Oh oh! Also there’s something interesting happening here with the creators in the “shoujo girl” space largely being very skinny. Like I don’t mean young and fit, I mean like, skinny and petite.

And no shade at all if that’s your body type. But that’s… All but one of them.
