This one has the sound of one he's making up on his own, on the spot. You can see how he's buying time while he figures out what the rest of the sentence is going to be. A childish and impulsive lie he decided to spin up and tell in that exact moment.

The strong online push against "Mary Sues" among budding writers online in the 2000s was actively bad advice and hamstrung the people who followed it and made space for worse writers who didn't care and who won't follow any good writing advice either.
