Is tentatively back online.

Still vicariously living my dreams of having badass magical powers and destroying evil men through the characters I write.

I reread this every winter. Sooo good, go buy it.
The Taiga Ridge Murders is perfect reading for the weekend solstice: a slow-burn gothic horror about women who are "unpalatable" and a primal scream of rage during the longest night of the year.

Me, every Friday: Tomorrow I will leave for the barn EARLY and return home early with ALL the writing time.

Me, every Saturday at 12: Finally heading to the barn where the Barn Time Vortex opens and time loses all meaning until I realize in a panic I need to make it home by 6 for writer's group.

I realized that in the absurdity this year has been, I hadn't posted any shorts. I wrote them, hidden away in a notebook, but I didn't share them. This one seemed like it probably applies to a lot of us right now.

You Are (Not) a Wellspring Run Dry - Michelle Manus
You think sometimes that perhaps you are a wellspring run dry. That all that was once energetic and hopeful and entertaining about you bubbled up out of the shallowest of sources some many seasons ago...

My friends, I say this with all the love in my heart: Right now might not be the moment for “But we should be TOLERANT and NUANCED about the plagiarism machines!”

Your tolerance and “nuance” will be weaponised by the grifters and their apologists. Please respect yourselves more.

This entire thread up and down. Everything I write, I learn from. My first novel will probably never (though never say never) be ripped apart and turned into something publishable. But I think of it often. I learned so much from it, and I can go back and read paragraphs and see myself in the words.
Sometimes you shelve projects for months or years or forever, but you learn stuff with every single one. You can reuse abandoned ideas. You can return at any time. Nothing you write is wasted.

Turning to generative AI? To me, this suggests a massive lack of confidence in yourself as a storyteller.

The #1 movie when you were 10 years old is how your 2026 is going to go.

Being born in the middle of the year I choose to believe I can go with the year pertaining to the latter half of my 10th year, as the alternative film was the Phantom Menace, and surely that is an atrocity not to be borne.

So much good stuff here! The Waverly Jones box set is perfect for getting your misanthropic PI fix with bonus side of craving bar food, bc Waverly's always eating it. I also just binged the entire Spirit Caller box set last week and highly recommend it if you need a good paranormal series.
Boxset and Bundle sale! 2 for $20/£15 until Dec 29 at Kobo. I'm pulling out several by friends in case you're eying one but haven't decided on your second.🧵

I am going on an indefinite internet hiatus for the sake of my sanity, so I am going to drop this here for anyone looking for books.

My horse made poor decisions today, so his auntie Skyla made this adjustment to his photo. Yes, those are porcupine quills. 18 of them. He's fine. Hopefully he makes better decisions in the future.

Niken did the art for Ladies Occult Society, and is doing the interior art for the Tranquility series appendix (the "artbook" by an in-series character).

She's a great person, loves her cats, and I would like her to not have to worry about vet bills right now.
Fellow cat people, Niken--the artist of these pieces (and many more)--just had a young cat diagnosed with diabetes. Vets are pricey everywhere but treatment is very costly for the average person in Jakarta. If you've got a fiver to spare and have enjoyed her work, toss it here ko-fi.com/megatruh

Stephen is always wonderful about supporting other authors so I am taking this opportunity to say his Eric Carter books are phenomenal and deserve a place on your shelf.

Gritty, darkly humorous, unique urban fantasy. You will inhale the entire series.

What good is a stove if it cannot keep water boiling in a pot this size unless the lid is on? I know the many valid reasons against gas stoves but every time I try to cook in a stock pot on an electric stove, I cry.

Cheyenne had a lifelong dream come true today. A cat finally returned his affections.

(Yes, the cat is outside, he is not mine, I can do nothing about this. He is a TNR cat who belongs to the barn, he receives routine veterinary care and food and has a warm place to sleep).

They’re all fucking getting paid, except for the musician.”

You know what you know
& the rest sputters out,
a candle flame gone cold
in the dark,
& I can't say a word,
can't explain,
can't interrogate it--
it's not my secret,
not my story,
but here is my margin-lit heart,
trying to breathe,
trying to run,
& you don't know
what it's cost
to stay.

Still annoyed that my cat hates my singing, which is fairly decent, and loves my piano playing, which is fairly atrocious. Played today for the first time in forever and she settled down nearby, serenely resting her head on her paws, and whenever I stopped playing she lifted her head to glare at me.

I have changed a single plot point 3 times already and if I have to change it a fourth I am going to rip out all of my hair and rock back and forth, wailing and gnashing my teeth like a proper author.

Buy Skyla's books. Her cat is unnecessarily expensive.
Ordered him the expensive prescription food the vet wants him on permanently and he’ll need more meds on hand for future episodes. I’d had optimistic thoughts of getting a new rug and bedding at IKEA but now Christmas is cancelled, everyone’s gift this year is Shawn’s bladder NOT full of blood. 😭

Describe your current health as if describing your pet's.

Pet: Horse

"Looks stressed and anxious, flinches if you touch her. Might be ulcers from the intense work schedule and move to the new stable. Try her on a calming supplement, a free feed diet, and take her on some trail rides to destress."
