Let me give some insight on this, as a producer in the dub industry who worked with major streamers, who's witnessed first-hand where this push for AI is coming from.

Japan's fascination for plesiosaurs most probably originates with the retrieval by a fishing boat of a carcass vaguely resembling the long extinct reptile (it's even referenced in Coo). Of course, it was quickly revealed to be the remains of a basking shark. Didn't stop people from dreaming though.
