Been wondering for a good while now: anyone know what happened to Michael Kazepis and King Shot Press? Up to a year or two ago he was still posting teasers for a couple of books but then... 🦗

I hope he's happy anyway, whatever he's up to.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

The tech bros have never delivered a meaningful product people actually asked for and wanted.

Had that been their actual focus, instead of trying to fund the total subjugation and then elimination of all workers in the name of capital, we’d have hoverboards by now.

In fact, let’s do this. Comment with what you’re looking for and I’ll try to recommend a read from a Palestinian author for you from my reading list. I’ll do my best to find you a match.

This is a comfort. I've been doing some version of this for years and have often vacillated between feeling not disciplined enough to finish things as quickly as most of my peers or rushing things to a conclusion just to say they're done.
Yup, once I started doing this, I actually started finishing things. I don't 'abandon' projects anymore, they go into 'the archives' until I have the energy/focus/drive/whatever to pick them back up again. Doing this has allowed me to let stuff cook for as long as it needs until it's ready.
gotta say, if things don't work out the "regular" way then let yourself do it the ADHD way. it may take longer and be more chaotic, but at the end of the day at least some things got done

I know this petition has much more support than it currently has. Please share far and wide. Petition to require generative AI to carry a watermark and to make it illegal to use a person’s likeness in generative AI without permission.

Petition: Require generative AI watermarks & ban using people’s likeness without consent
As AI generated content becomes increasingly realistic, we think laws should be put in place to prevent misuse. All such media should carry a permanent watermark or disclosure, alongside a blanket ban...

Absolute fucking insanity. Please, no more of this "we're heading towards fascism" nonsense: it's already here.
This is madness.

All books by Normal People and Conversations with Friends author Sally Rooney set to be withdrawn from sale.

The 34-year-old Irish author says: “The disappearance of my work from bookshops would mark a truly extreme incursion by the state into the realm of artistic expression.”
Sally Rooney books may be withdrawn from UK sale over Palestine Action ban, court told
Rooney has said she intended to use royalties from her work "to go on supporting Palestine Action."

Today I learned of the existence of this abomination - and can I suggest that if anyone on here is considering publishing with Routledge, you reconsider?

(Then perhaps sign up to the Library of Babel, which is doing some awesome things:

Right, I'm off out to enjoy the pissing rain and the cold. Which is probably infinitely better for my mental health than ranting about the evils of AI and speculating how far we are at this point in human evolution from it being heads on poles/guillotine time.

Ministers are driven *everywhere* by private cars, kept on standby and driven by a pool of permanent drivers who are much better paid than taxi drivers and who are unionised civil servants at the GCS.

But let's go after vulnerable people trying to access basic medical care.
Government to ban asylum seekers from using taxis
The ban is set to come in February and any exemptions will have to be signed off by the Home Office.

I agree with all this, but I think our anger should be directed at a system that grossly undervalues teachers and deliberately under-resources educational environments to an extent that AI is seen as a valid solution rather than a deepening of the existing problems.
If you can’t teach without a genAI cheat sheet, then you can’t teach. And if you’re judgement is so bad that you trust genAI for basic facts, you should not be teaching children.

The same with writing! Be bold! Try out weird stuff! Fail spectacularly!!

It’s how you learn what your voice is and what works!!

It’s how you get better AND how you generate ideas for totally bonkers (or sweet or romantic or scary or whatever) stories readers want!!!
Here's your reminder to draw in a sketchbook!!!!!
Draw ugly!! Draw weird!!!!
DRAW WITH NOTHING BUT PEN OR PAINT MARKERS

I adore Weychester. In its streets and wyndes one can play the game of guessing which secret society lives behind which door. Here the Order of the Clapperclaw, there the Grand Lodge of Mirrors. The Duat Club is easy to spot, but many other entrances demand our pondering. – #CLNolan
