Hello everyone, I am former math teacher of 5 years (6th - 9th grade) now learning software development. I’m also substituting and tutoring in the meantime. My ultimate goal is to get a job at a math education company. I have a few personal/portfolio projects in the works including a math game.

I’d argue that rigorous and academically challenging work builds a strong classroom rapport.

We do hard shit together 💛
One of my bigger frustrations from this school year: the false dichotomy too many buy into that you can EITHER have positive rapport and relationships in the classroom OR rigorous, academic challenge.

Both/and. Both/and. Both/and.

My home of Missoula just voted to establish the pride flag as an official government flag of the city, thereby circumventing the state's asinine pride flag ban. 🏳️‍🌈

Missoula is once again showing how to fight back against policies that seek to erase the LGBTQ community.

It’s fun starting a new hobby with ADHD because I never know if I’ve found a new lifelong passion or if I’m going to spend $2000 on stuff and immediately lose all interest

Me: I'm a math teacher.

Them: Oh, I hated math in school. Also, what's with this new way of teaching math? Why don't they just teach it the way we were taught?

I really wish I could stop using AI as the example for every thread, but it truly does embody every single product design antipattern.

Here, "we'll make a chatbot and you figure out what it's for" is the way all of this works, down to Nvidia cranking out chips and Microsoft building data centers.

Asking AI about coding (or anything?) feels like when you go ask a professor for help and they just start talking for 10 mins straight without any checks for understanding and you just stare at them blankly. Like please this was a yes or no question. Why are you giving me a full page of code.

I just did a task that I've been putting off for weeks and it took less than 10 minutes!

Please clap!

I will learn nothing from this!

Does anyone else feel relieved to have a slight return to healthier times (at least in spirit) with this shift to new social media platforms?

I have more thoughts for my blog, but yeah I feel comforted and relived to have a sense of community and connection re-emerging.

Love this! I would ‘soft launch’ the idea of functions with @fawnnguyen.bsky.social ‘s Visual Patterns during our entire Pythagorean Theorem unit as warm ups / number talks.

Bc diving into rate of change on day 1 of a unit with little to no prior experience is rough.

It’s worth noting that Bluesky is organized as a PBC, which means that while they are for-profit, they do not have an obligation to maximize shareholder value if it conflicts with the public interest.

"Stunningly, however, those who had learned expecting to be tested had forgotten much more. Their superior rote memorization was no longer in evidence a few days later. Evidently, they memorized the material for the test, and when the test was over, they pulled the plug and let it drain out."

My adhd brain can’t do all the videos. I wanna learn while I walk or drive and I ran out of interesting podcasts. 😅
