Hey... if you wanna pay me I can make you a neat little painting like this. I doesn't have to be a beetle. I can paint lots of things: dogs, hubcaps, great-uncles, lots of things. Anyhow, this size is $150(Cdn). DM if you need one.
"autumn (emerald)", oil on watercolour paper, 5 1/4 x 7 1/4", 2025 (commission) #art #sciart

Since I have a lot of rural Alberta folks who follow me: the Edmonton police are looking for anyone with property with an old well north of Edmonton to contact them (more details in the video). It's for a cold case.

At Yonge & Dundas Jays fans are obeying the pedestrian scramble, as is the custom & returning to sidewalk each light cycle.
I'm curious what they filter into "climate anxiety".
Copying is cool! Everyone learns from copying! (But yes, this does make me feel a little better :-)

BTW, this guy painted for 365 days, mostly copying masterworks, and he genuinely did seem to learn a lot.

I am so envious of what you achieve with some blocks of colour and that scrabbly line of link.
I've just started making various kinds of daal and black daal sounds intriguing. This is going on next week's menu. (Also: damn straight that you should be able to opt out of the Discover tab!)

I cannot recommend you enough to install the Wikipedia app on your devices and use it like you would any search engine. Nowadays they even have tabs so you can open many articles at once.

And, if you can, please donate to the foundation. It has survived the internet enshittification that way.
wikipedia's data shows that AI is siphoning traffic away from the site, which is a danger to its sustainability. ironically Wikipedia is more important than ever to users who want reliable information instead of slop, and to AI companies that need it for training data www.404media.co/wikipedia-sa...

the difference between a wonderful audiobook performance by a gifted voice actor and this "digital voice" horseshit masquerading as legit audiobooks makes me steaming mad. good narration is important and deserves to be paid for!!!!!!

Friendly reminder that Tidal ($10.99) is now cheaper than Spotify ($11.99), delivers better audio quality, pays its artists 2x as much, and generally doesn't allow AI slop.

Should add really that if you're a smol newsletter bean who would dearly love to NOT be on Substack, then I will happily roll (and manage) a Ghost install for you for cost + a small maintenance fee.

I'll talk you through setting up your own mailgun and stripe. Do that and you keep ALL your revenue.
Okay, Ghost V6 integrated with Tinybird for analytics is pretty damn filthy.

Been running @theupfront.media on Ghost for a while as part of our "No Nazi platforms" stack. Very happy with it (and with our Germany-based email hosting instead of Google Business)

The technology you use is a choice.

It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance

It's the exact equivalent of being mad at NASA for telling you that your idea about Mars being closer than we thought is wrong, and then acting vindicated when you run into an asteroid on your otherwise-doomed voyage into space.

My favorite aspect of the Columbus legend is him getting rejected by the Portuguese gets spun as them not recognizing the genius of his idea. No - he went into a roomful of expert navigators and made basic math mistakes, they thought he was a moron, and they wouldn't fund his idea on that basis.

"Columbus Day:" No one wants it. No one wants to celebrate it. Perfectly decent Monday in October saddled with the name of a rapist.

"Titus Pullo Day:" 100% participation. Wine flows freely. Someone says "THIRTEEN!" and everyone responds. Boring old October Monday turned great fun.
