Thanks again for the generous invitation to join the seminar, to listen to and challenge monumentality with @profdanhicks.bsky.social, but also with the super group of students and their sharp questions.

Hi Sandeep, which room is the seminar taking place in? I’m here, but the receptionist was unable to help me. Thank you.

What does it mean to use #genAI "responsibly" in research? In this post, @petertarras.bsky.social & I respond to a taxonomy which equates disclosure of use with transparency & responsibility. We object to this & call for more conversations about how & why it's used, who is harmed, & who benefits.

Andrea Reyes Elizondo @altibel.bsky.social and I have responded to a blog, recently published on @leidenmadtrics.bsky.social, which argued that using AI responsibly in research means being transparent about it. We object that supposed transparency obscures more fundamental ethical questions.
Why AI transparency is not enough
Recently, a taxonomy to disclose the use of generative AI (genAI) in research outputs was presented as an approach that creates transparency and thereby supports responsible genAI use. In this post we...

We all need the freedom to travel, but time restrictions on bus passes lock Disabled people out of work, study and our community. It’s time to #UnlockTransportAccess

Three Disabled white people on a bridge, gazing firmly at the camera – a male wheelchair user wearing a bright orange cardigan, a female wheelchair user with long sandy hair, and a tall man with cropped white hair and a red shirt. The photo has a hot orange background with yellow electrical tape with ‘We’re supporting #UnlockTransportAccess’ in bold black letters. Yellow arrows point to the photo and words.

The Regime's goal is to grind everyone down. Plain & simple. Our goal is to refuse this by taking turns to fight where and how we can. When one group needs to bow out, then another group needs to step in and so on. We don't all have to do everything. We can all do something though. Stay in the fight

Happy Columbo’s Day
Screenshot from Columbo. He his talking to his dog, which is sitting is the drivers seat of a car. “Okay, I’m gonna put you in charge. You take care of the car. You’re a responsible dog. When I get back, if the car’s okay, I’ll give you another cookie.” “If the car’s gone,” “I’ll give you another cookie anyway” “because I love you.”

A Jay perched on a wooden post with its tail feathers spread and wing raised dramatically, as if flagging down a ride. Its expression looks mid-squawk, giving the impression it’s calling for help or trying to make a quick getaway.

Israel used 3D scans developed by the Scottish Maritime Museum in propaganda animations, which were a key part of its attempts to justify attacks on hospitals and residential areas in Gaza, Syria and Iran. The 3D scans, developed for boatbuilding workshops, were used without the museum's knowledge.
How a Scottish maritime museum ended up in Israel’s 3D propaganda
An analysis of dozens of Israeli army animations discovered digital assets sourced not from classified intelligence but commercial libraries and content creators.

Thanks again for the recommendations ❤️ We didn't have time to explore them much (the conference gave us a busy schedule), but we'll be back. On Tuesday evening, we were invited to the City Hall by the Mayor's team for a fabulous vegan buffet in a space that has been in the news recently (🫣).

Rappel qu'on à en France, de manière bien documentée, notamment au Quai Branly ou à l'abbaye de Fontevraud, des exemplaires des ces bronzes du Benin pillés en 1897 par les britanniques.

Finally finding a needle for Nålebinding at the Oslo Kulturhistorisk Museum. I remember discussing it with @drnwillburger.bsky.social 2-3 years ago, now I'll be able to try it out 🧶
Pleated town dress on display at the Oslo Kulturhistorisk Museum.

The accompanying note explains: "Piece of pleated town dress
Tansberg, Vestfold, Storgaten, 1150-1250. Dresses with sharp pleats came into fashion in towns in the 12th century. They were popular for a hundred years! The pleats were sewn down the back of the fabric and acted as a flexible accordion. This gave the garment good width and kept the rigid shape in place." Photo of a mitten with the following accompanying text: "Mitten. Wool, needle binding. Oslo, Gamlebyen/Old Town, Serenga. Ca. 1025-1125" Photo of a Nålebinding needle, purchased at the Oslo Kulturhistorisk museum.

From what I have seen in my very superficial research, the term ’fait colonial’ is used in a teaching context, for example there is a recent master's thesis (2023) at the University of Liege. I’m not familiar enough with the other terms to know how to situate it in relation to the other concepts.
marievc.bsky.social
I think Fanon is referring to ‘situation coloniale’. I’m discovering the term ’le fait colonial’ through your question, because I tend to read in English (but I’m a French-speaking Belgian).
marievc.bsky.social
Adopting this term as the title of a dissertation means becoming part of its genealogy, ouch. There are other scholars, sources and silences to explore.
