Game devs posting "Why wouldn't you attend GDC? Wouldn't it be bad for your business if you don't go? Don't you want to be where games are made? What are the chances something bad will happen, real slim right?" are just...I don't know, man. Read the room. And by the room I mean the rest of the world

First day of class done! Was nervous on how they'd receive interactive fiction. They played Tavern Crawler to see choice-based IF w/ Twine, and then The Wand for parser-based IF w/ Inform.

Response was positive! Took them a bit to get used to it, especially parser. But they are game to learn both 😍

Currently fiddling with Inform, as I want to use this in my Game Writing class this term

I'm a bit worried this could be too intense for a non-technical class; none of them will have dev experience

BUT. Come on. How cool is this?! The left image is the natural language code. The right is the game.

Yay I just discovered Slay the Spire has a Fast Mode setting, which means I can fail twice as fast lol 😭

This article sums up my experience teaching higher ed this term:
- Students asking why they don't get perfect scores for imperfect work
- They can see their final grades in real time (and everyone else's, in a range) adding to their anxiety
There's comfort knowing it wasn't just me - it's everywhere
On the surface, grade inflation might seem simple to address, @ibogost.com writes. But it’s a strange and wicked problem on campus, with no single cause or obvious solution: https://theatln.tc/ds5cBJAV

What's everyone playing over the holidays? I'm currently in my first playthrough of Cult of the Lamb; enjoying it immensely!

(And am I the only one who always has to have a holiday game? Like it's not a vacation if I don't start something new 😁)

I got a concussion and had to stay in bed for the past few days 🤕

Silver lining is I've been gaming nonstop. Was able to get to Rank C in Pokémon Z-A, AND finally win a run in Slay the Spire! Currently can't put the latter down, wow I'd forgotten how good it was.

Back to school tomorrow though

2 of my 3 sections are wrapping up this week. After my first term teaching game design, I am exhausted 😅 But also learned a lot about teaching in 2025: learning management systems, Zoom classes, students, all of it.

Next term has less load but I'm teaching game writing and level design. Excited!

We were just discussing this in class today! A student shared that after taking my game design class, she went back to play games in genres she didn't like, and realized how good those games were even if they weren't for her. And that she didn't have to like them to appreciate them. ❤️
This is the number one issue I find with junior game designers (and unfortunately, non-designers who think anyone can design). So many people cannot tell the difference between "a game I like" and "a game that's designed well" and they get REAL mad if you point out there's a difference
begging people to learn to separate “i like it” with “it’s good.”

i like some things that are objectively crap. you can admit that you do too. it’s fine

My students' games are nearing their final form. I'd forgotten the ebb and flow of it: the unlimited possibilities in the beginning, the furious creativity unleashed in prototyping, the hardships when you realize what's actually possible, the hump, then things come together and boom! Magic. #gamedev

Hey #gamedev! Crowdsourcing again: I'm teaching Game Writing next term to arts students and am looking for a no-code story engine that they can use. Twine is on my list; I used to use Inform 7 as well. Anything else I should look at that will help them write interactive narratives without coding?

Teaching 5-Minute Marvel in game design class today as we study emergent systems! Which hero is your favorite? I always pick Ms Marvel 🥊 (Love her, plus she supports everyone)

Thinking of doing NaNoWriMo this November, but instead of writing a novel, I'll learn Twine a little bit each day so I can teach it in my game writing course next term. I'll call it NaNoTwineMo. Yay or nay?

First time to try @todoist.com as I had a bunch of schoolwork to rush, plus random tasks I never get around to doing. I liked their branding that it was a place for you to dump your to-dos so you can deal with them at the right time.

Well I just cleared today's list and it feels gooood #todoistzero

I posted my official gamescom asia recap/thanks on LinkedIn, so I'll post behind-the-scenes thoughts here instead 😜

Being session chair for Day 2 Stage 2 was super cool. I did a tech rehearsal the day before, and on the day, I introduced each session, ran Q&A after, and kept the flow on time. 1/4

An industry veteran and founder of the International Mobile Gaming Awards, Maarten Noyons, passed away recently.

Many of us who knew him have been posting tributes on LinkedIn and Facebook. As heartwrenching as this has been (I have been crying for days), it also reminded me...
