Over the weekend, NYT and WaPo reported the Justice Department's argument for why War Powers Resolution should not apply to boat strikes.

It comes down to definition of the word “hostilities.”

Former State Dept attorney @bcfinucane.bsky.social writes the DOJ argument is "incorrect and dangerous.”

"Factchecking Trump on '60 Minutes'"

In today's 'First Draft' morning newsletter from Zeteo, I counted and debunked at least *17 obvious, brazen lies* that the president told CBS's Norah O'Donnell, and that she just let slide:

Mehdi debunks the president's lies, unpacks the failure of our mainstream media, and has the latest from Gaza, as well as Trump's 'Great Gatsby'-esque Halloween party.

And again, a pattern of putting out statements accusing people of serious Federal crimes and then releasing them hours or days or weeks later with no charges. And no retraction.
NEWS: Federal agents crashed with woman’s car, pointed guns at her, dragged her out by legs, tossed her in a minivan, held her and (eventually) let her go without charges. This as Chicagoans say the immigration blitz is out of control. (DHS blames her.)

A "close call" on deference to the executive's determination of an emergency?

If trade deficits are an emergency, then so are Tuesdays. The word loses all meaning.

Evidently there was an Auschwitz-themed float in a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania.

The float was for a Catholic school, and to their credit the church immediately disavowed it.

Thing is, I don’t think high school kids did this entirely on their own. I’m guessing parents had to be involved.

Democrats say this constantly, but when front pages of The NY Times and everyone else refuses to acknowledge it, or thinks stating it is is being a Dem partisan, how do you break through?
“every time theres a republican president the economy collapses” feels like pretty easy messaging on the economy
Congrats to everyone who put Republicans in charge "for the economy," the first three quarters of 2025 already had more layoffs than any of the years in which Biden or Obama was President except 2009 (when Dems were still cleaning up the prior Republican mess).

Today's "One First" dives into the question #SCOTUS is now asking in the Illinois National Guard case—and why "regular forces" *does* mean only the military; why the Trump administration should therefore *lose*; and why that *won't* necessarily provide a justification to invoke the Insurrection Act:
187. "Regular Forces" and the Insurrection Act
The supplemental briefing order in the Illinois National Guard case provides an obvious way for the Court to block President Trump's deployments to date—and a fair concern about what could come next.
