i think a better distinction would be riskless protests rather than peaceful protests. the civil rights protests and gandhi's protests were rather peaceful, but not riskless to those actually protesting (same with general strikes and labor strikes)
the flipside of this is that pride can also be good and that we should be okay about flaunting that we are actually good at things/experts/obsessives (see dieworkwear for the style i mean)
mine is that social shame can actually be good and the lack of it (especially around being stupid or tasteless) is partially whats fueling the downfall of america
fwiw i've been able to follow everyone i've wanted to and not yet found a limit, but yeah its def a different way to think about social media than normal and i dont really think its a bluesky alt in the way ppl want. hopefully someone will make an easy to self host version of masto/bluesky
i guess thats why i like it. i dont mind the town square element of a twitter style place, but mastodon has that old internet niche/autism breeding ground that feels hard to cultivate when everyone is constantly replying to everything/vying for attention
