Barbara Newman, writing about Boccaccio, notes that ‘in modern Italian, the adjective boccaccesco mean “lascivious”’ (LRB, 14 August). She might have added that in the UK, ‘Chaucerian’ means about the same, though with a scatological edge. Meanwhile here in Japan the Decameron has a special following because slang for ‘big’ is deca and for ‘penis’ is Mara, while ron means ‘a treatise’.

I adore London&fully agree on Dubai, but the author‘s criticism of Paris& Berlin is a joke. French political turmoil is bad is it? Have you watched UK news since 2014? German trains are slow? Thank God for the sound state of UK Infrastructure.

Yikes. So far a yearly repeat covid jab is still free for anyone who wants it in Belgium. I got mine (seventh jab in total since the start of the pandemic) a week ago (without being in a special risk category). I don't expect this to last forever, but when they start charging it will never be €100!
