The former invite a student to share their opinions and feelings, which are essentially worthless *in an academic context.*
The latter, on the other hand, require students to explain and apply the argument of an assigned text. Valuable!
But: my experience teaching on contentious topics is that 'reaction' papers are not a good tool. Students must be required to hew to the literature.
