I get where you're coming from bc that describes my non-classical experience learning how to play guitar, drums, songwrite, etc.

I'm prob misreading you at some point, but if there's anything I take away from Adorno, it's that spontaneity in an amateur sense is something that can (and should, but isn't under capitalism) be dignified.

this is more a vent on my end fwiw

my main objection with Adorno's treatment (which isn't technically an objection) is that actually completing the project would require taking as much care and consideration that Adorno has towards, say, classical music, towards jazz history + practice. it's def not easy.

I just kinda hate how some Marx-inspired ppl in my field just throw out Adorno bc they get received opinions about what "the culture industry" entails, how/why DoE is important, etc etc. it's just spouted off as "common knowledge" that's just untrue as some1 working thru it.

and tbc there are legit Adorno uses in jazz studies – Fumi Okiji at Berkeley is the big one in Jazz as Critique; @vcmusictheory.bsky.social has done some great writing as well.

ehhh while I understand the impulse, there's been musicological work that questions that defense (not reading yours as a defense). I can try + pull it up if you haven't read it b4.

the second twist is that it doesn't imply that jazz is *essentially* damaged (as with most if not all forms of popular music); rather, it's that only under communism can this damage be treated reparatively
December 4, 2025 at 6:22 PM
the twist is that Adorno *does* the second route and that everyone reduces it to the first because ppl project Weber into Adorno
