The second way in which slavery's profits were put to use was by professional and amateur musicians who owned slaves or who were hired to teach music to slave owners or their children or to other participants in the slave economy. We know very little about the domestic lives of professional musicians in the European tradition prior to the Revolution in the North American colonies. Did they own slaves? Pachelbel (1690-1750) certainly did. The younger son of Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), Charles settled in Boston before 1734, in which year he went to Trinity Church, Newport, Rhode Island, to assemble the organ that had been donated to the church by a recent res-ident, the philosopher, divine, and would-be college administrator George Berkeley (1685-1753) (Perry 2008). In 1736 Pachelbel moved to Charleston, South Carolina, becoming organist of St. Peter's Church in 1740. He was the teacher of Peter Pelham (1721-
1805), who was the church organist in Williamsburg, Virginia, 1755-1802, and whose manuscript keyboard tutor includes works by Handel (Butler 2005). An inventory of Pachelbel's belongings taken after his death reveals that his two most valuable possessions were slaves, Peg and Ned, valued at £230 and £100 respectively (Redway 1952). In this, he was typical of men who considered themselves gentlemen, a slave or slaves being the cheap colonial substitution for servants hired for the same purposes in Britain. By way of comparison, the inventory says Pachelbel's small spinet was worth £10 and his clavichord £4.
