To be fair to Adorno & Horkheimer, they think it is “productive” despite not producing physical objects (which advertisers also do): “Scheinproduktion” doubles as the production of “Schein” or illusory semblance, which is undoubtedly real & shapes us as subjects! this aspect gets lost in translation
