"When we use generative AI, we consent to the appropriation of our intellectual property by data scrapers. We stuff the pockets of oligarchs with even more money. We hand over our autonomy, at the very moment of emerging American fascism."
“An extraordinary amount of money is spent by the artificial intelligence industry to ensure that acquiescence is the only plausible response. But marketing is not destiny.” Out from behind the paywall: the Editors on the literature of AI resignation.

Politics the right way
Like hundreds of other people, I was targeted by Charlie Kirk's "Professor Watchlist" project and spuriously accused of being a "Terror Supporter" and an "Antisemite". The legacy of Charlie Kirk is bigotry, classroom surveillance and anti-intellectual harassment.

Qatar. Syria. Tunisia. Lebanon. Yemen. Gaza. The Israeli military is bombing country after country – six in the span of three days – with total impunity.
Monstrous.
Citing DEI concerns, the Trump administration has halted funding for programs that support students with combined hearing and vision loss in eight states.

Their funding had previously been approved through Sept. 2028.

“How low can you go?” one advocate asked. “How can you do this to children?”

The belief that poverty and homelessness are about "individual choices" didn't arise on its own. It was manufactured through decades of messaging designed to protect the policies and interests that create mass precarity.

As this new poll shows, that propaganda campaign has been wildly successful.
Most US adults think individual choices keep people in poverty, new AP-NORC/Harris poll finds
A new AP-NORC poll finds that most U.S. adults think personal choices are a major driver of poverty and homelessness, while fewer blame a lack of government support.

remember folks, we cant have gun restrictions because if we do the federal government will occupy our streets, imprison people without due process, ship dissidents to foreign gulags and things of that nature

It’s up to the discretion of RFK Jr to define what ”medically frail” is when it comes to potential Medicaid work requirement exemptions—which may play a huge role in deciding which chronically ill and disabled people could qualify. My latest for @motherjones.com.

We can be wanted and valued just the way we are. It's possible. It's worth trying for and learning about. Don't coach us into a lifetime of fear and hiding instead.

D.C. has more residents than two U.S. states. They pay more per capita in federal taxes than any other state.

But they don’t get a serious seat at the table to decide how they’re governed.

D.C. statehood now.

Ugly laws led to poor, disabled people being institutionalized. It's now part of the strategy Trump plans to use to get rid of unhoused people, in DC and beyond.

For @motherjones.com, I spoke to @okaysoldierschweik.bsky.social, who wrote a book about ugly laws.

one of the fundamental political divides is "it's better to deprive millions of people of basic needs so that a couple dozen people don't game the system" vs "what the fuck is wrong with you"
"We can't have Palestinians On Here because some of them are scammers"

is the same as

"We can't give money to homeless people because they might spend it on drugs and some want to be homeless"

is the same as

"We can't have universal healthcare because some people will abuse it."

The process of doing things - like making art or making history - is joyful. It’s messy, complicated, and frustrating, but it’s also creating something from nothing, all on your own. And it is a joy.
Consumer facing "A.i." is about triggering the excretion of a mediocre product. It's a rejection of PROCESS. Life itself is process, not fucking product. Push "A.i." on kids and you rob them of the joyful experience of life itself. I am not exaggerating.
