I want jobs for humanities experts to kill AI systems.
I'm starting to see jobs out there for 'humanties experts' to train AI systems. I know we all need work, but don't do it.

It's largely lost today because we've allowed constitutional law to become the exclusive preserve of lawyers, but the original idea of written constitutionalism was partly one of public education, publicity, & (proto-)democracy—people should be able to read & come to know the law which binds them
The evidence is the text. All you have to do is read the Constitution.

The Constitution is not a legal document as much as it is a social contract. The insistence that it is entirely the former has damaged our acceptance of the latter.

between escalating invasiveness of AI and increasingly aggressive efforts by corporations to create anti-art media monopolies, it feels like a better time than ever to make weird amateur art and support whatever projects your friends are trying to get off the ground

there's a parallel between nonprofit world and academia, where there's a constant tide of idealistic, hopeful people coming in the door, and the people on top are able to lever that commitment to The Cause to extract from them in a way that's harder when everyone's just there to make a buck

I call this the Dream Vampire Economic Model. It also exists in the arts, publishing, and every other somewhat prestigious industry that young people want to work in.

Similar things: When Jerusalem Demsas was going on and on about how she preferred Twitter she threw off that she could take slurs directed at her.

We had a couple of decades in American life, too brief, sure, where that was not ok. It wasn’t ok in 2015. We don’t have to let this stuff roar back.

Again: Noah Smith posts insane Nazi shit all the time and one of the pod boys gave him a whole episode just this week. Ezra Klein pretends not to see it also.

This is all apiece.
He is an entirely elite driven phenomena, and the fact that he is so great at enthralling powerful idiots is going to be the next big battle after Trump finally dies. Spreading the Hanania mind virus is dangerous and the people that do it are not as immune as they think.

Very recently, using slurs and offering open gutter racism was viewed as bad. We should not get inured to its resurgence nor should we accept it.

much has rightfully been said about the role the storefronts play in strangling the adult content out of games, but i think it's also worth pointing to how restrictive twitch and youtube are, when conventional wisdom is that you need people to stream your game for it to sell well

There's still enough overlap that a lot of people are snapping up "commercial" graphics cards like the RTX 5090 and lashing bunches of them together to cludge together the kind of computational power the "AI" garbage requires to do math incorrectly or tell you there are two R's in "strawberry."

Right now, Nvidia has tasked TSMC to crank out GPUs that could more rightly be described as computational units. They're referred to as GPUs because they share some of the underlying architecture and design as traditional graphics cards, but then a bicycle and a high speed train share those as well.

It started back when people realized that computer graphics were a lot of math and complex calculations, and the cards could be re-tasked to something like cryptography or rendering CGI.

That's when Nvidia pushed forward with its CUDA architecture, and suddenly GPUs weren't just for games anymore.

People say this a lot and it's a fundamental misunderstanding of the "GPUs" in question.

Server GPUs are not graphics cards as you know them. They won't work in your PC. They have a few other uses but their main strength is computation, number crunching.

When the bubble pops most will end up junk.
On the plus side it’ll be a lot easier to get a GPU once the bubble bursts and those things are liquidated for pennies on the dollar
