there's a parallel between nonprofit world and academia, where there's a constant tide of idealistic, hopeful people coming in the door, and the people on top are able to lever that commitment to The Cause to extract from them in a way that's harder when everyone's just there to make a buck

Similar things: When Jerusalem Demsas was going on and on about how she preferred Twitter she threw off that she could take slurs directed at her.

We had a couple of decades in American life, too brief, sure, where that was not ok. It wasn’t ok in 2015. We don’t have to let this stuff roar back.

Very recently, using slurs and offering open gutter racism was viewed as bad. We should not get inured to its resurgence nor should we accept it.

There's still enough overlap that a lot of people are snapping up "commercial" graphics cards like the RTX 5090 and lashing bunches of them together to cludge together the kind of computational power the "AI" garbage requires to do math incorrectly or tell you there are two R's in "strawberry."

Right now, Nvidia has tasked TSMC to crank out GPUs that could more rightly be described as computational units. They're referred to as GPUs because they share some of the underlying architecture and design as traditional graphics cards, but then a bicycle and a high speed train share those as well.

It started back when people realized that computer graphics were a lot of math and complex calculations, and the cards could be re-tasked to something like cryptography or rendering CGI.

That's when Nvidia pushed forward with its CUDA architecture, and suddenly GPUs weren't just for games anymore.
