1) Get rid of it: Columbus Day became a holiday in 1934 to honor Italian-Americans. Its main backers were the Knights of Columbus and rich guy Generoso Pope, who secured NY's Italian vote for FDR. Honoring Italian-Americans seems fine to me. But here's the deal: Columbus is the wrong guy for that./3

Columbus seems to have hated being Italian. He left Italy as soon as he could and after the age of 26 never went back to Italy, never would talk about his background, and never wrote in Italian. And the "American" part of "Italian-American"? Also bad. /4

As the guy in the White House has recently insisted, today is Columbus Day. What to do about it, given Indigenous peoples’ entirely merited dislike of the whole thing? A couple-three ideas that I've been thinking about. 1/

As far as I can see, there are three basic possibilities:

1) Get rid of the holiday;

2) Rename the holiday;

3) Rethink its meaning. 2/

When someone pays $150 million for a publication that makes $15 million in annual revenue, it’s not the business that's being bought.

I mean our friend here no disrespect when I say it is too soon to tell in regards to the level accomplishment. As long as Netanyahu runs things, it will always be so. But waiting at no political benefit to get a deal you could've had a year or more ago is not to be celebrated.

Trump deserves much of the grief he getsOur time in the NYC area gave us more info than we should know.

This is a titanic accomplishment…which should stand alone. The silence from the Left only hurts them. Kudos in private isn’t going to curry favor in this case.

Next fall, the similar moonrises will be three to four widths of the moon to the right (south) of the symmetry axis, a tendency that will continue until 2034 before the range starts edging back to the left (north).

A wonderful moonrise viewing along the symmetry axis of the Octagon Earthworks, an experience which will repeat a few more times into early 2026, but not be repeated until the first near approaches of 2044. I’ll be 83 then, so I’m making the most of these!

Should the New York Times be sold to Pennysaver and its editors sent to work in Amazon warehouses? It depends on who you ask.
