i was reading this at the bus stop and having complicated feelings about it, and the bus came and i got on and sat down and i noticed the guy next to me was watching tiktok (you know, like everyone on the bus), and i glanced over, and it was a jamelle bouie video

so ok universe you win this time
i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

Ephron is undoubtedly one of the best wordsmiths we ever had, but to be able to set those words to music, so to speak, isn’t always easy. You never feel the camera, not for a minute. Whether it’s down on the floor when they roll out the rug, or capturing the post-sex awkward dinner out. Seamless.

When Harry Met Sally has an impeccable script, of course, but SO much of the comedy in that movie is in the directing. Where would Harry’s confession about his wife leaving him be without the wave interrupting it at a baseball game? Also, the most gorgeous fall shot in history?

Here are the 28 Dem Senators who voted to advance the first federal ban on trans athletes & a federal definition of sex that would make trans & intersex people non-existent: Angela Alsobrooks (MD), Tammy Baldwin (WI), Richard Blumenthal (CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE), Chris Coons (DE), ->
By a vote of 76-23, S 1071 passes the motion to proceed to the motion to concur. Won't know who voted for this until the roll call is uploaded, but safe to say it passed with the support of at least 24 members of the Democratic caucus. (Rand Paul probably voted nay and Steve Daines has been absent).

I keep seeing more articles about how they regret it now that the damage is done & I truly believe that if you have any genuine interest in salvaging what’s left of this country then whether you want to or not, you can never forgive these people. You can never let them live what they did down.

Important post: my colleague documents an “official, nationwide policy of intimidating and threatening people who attempt to observe and record DHS operations,” or who peacefully and without interference follow and protest them, even though the First Amendment broadly protects doing those things. /1
On Dec. 4, DOJ labeled people who impede or "dox" ICE agents "domestic terrorists." I document how DHS believes following, recording, and protesting agents is "impeding," and has a policy of threatening & arresting ICE observers. That's unconstitutional. www.cato.org/blog/dhs-pol...

In South Sudan, USAID budget cuts closed a health clinic in the middle of a cholera outbreak.

Also, you know whose legal expenses are not paid for even if they were policy makers at the same level as the governor? His victims.
“That brings the state’s costs for the case alone to $10.5 million under a law that entitles state employees to reasonable litigation expenses if they are accused of wrongdoing while serving in their positions.”

Surely these expenses are UNreasonable? Could the comptroller shut this down?

Under existing law, the prosecutions would probably fail. Not to minimize their potential to upend lives, or the ways that the mere threat has laid waste to the care ecosystem. But this government has made it clear they want to build and use lists like this. And that's scary, totalitarian shit.
