I'm still drawing antifascist animals for book pics!

@katiecandraw.bsky.social's precious handsome man posed preciously and handsomely with Good Old Fashioned Korean Spirit, so here's a drawing of him making the world better by "updating" a community safety app (sitting on the keyboard)

There needs to be more coverage of this in the news. I have read so many stories bout this on Facebook, first hand stories of the terror of that storm, and very little coverage n media.

Screenshot of a Facebook post. Photo is an elderly woman holding a child on her ap on a couch with flood water around them. Both are wearing jackets inside. Text says: This was after our 1st drift.. staying put for awhile. Our 3rd and final drift was terrifying. House moving fast then we started spinning in circles. While we were spinning in circles my oldest daughter was just staring at me while I held onto my younger two. Kipnuk doesn't look like kipnuk anymore, like more than 3/4 of the homes displaced, power poles fallen. It smells like stove oil outside. Contaminated

“Things are always happening that have the potential to change you.” 🔥

"You make the best of it all and hope you can help make it a little better for the gurl after you."

- Miss Major, 2023 💔
One of the things I hear with some younger trans people I know is they feel, "I'm gonna get this surgery, and I'm gonna learn that way of speaking, and I'm gonna be done." You're never done. If you're a straight, cisgender person, you're never done. Things are always happening that have the potential to change you. So all I am today is not who I'm gonna be tomorrow, because of the things that happened to me today and later tonight. People forget that. "Oh, after I transition, I'm gonna be through." Well, good luck with that. 'Cause if you're through, then it's time to leave, you know, and I don't wanna go anywhere yet.
I'm in my seventies. Why didn't I stop? Number one is community. My gurls. I've had moments of thinking about stopping, but I didn't. I made sure I would step back, reju- venate myself, and then got back out there, and that's how you make a way. Our stories are not all the same, but the destination is: to get some place where we have some peace and harmony, and we can be at ease with ourselves and the people around us. You make the best of it all and hope you can help make it a little better for the gurl after you.

I was thrilled to help to excavate more of this huge Oxfordshire dinosaur track site earlier this year. The BBC's new article has a ton of fantastic images and graphics that bring the tracks to life, including a moment where a sauropod paused to... do something?

Back in June we were back on the Oxfordshire “dinosaur highway”, excavating more dinosaur tracks with our teams from the Universities of Birmingham, Oxford & Liverpool John Moores. The BBC have a story out today about our work at the site:

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy passed away today according to the House of GG. She was a veteran of the Stonewall rebellion and a lifelong organizer for the safety and dignity of trans people, sex workers, and the incarcerated. She came from the same generation and milieu as Marsha and Sylvia. She was 78.

Devastated and undone but celebrating that we got to be on the planet at the same time as our beloved Major.

May we all be as unwavering In the face of fascism as she remained.

Sending love to the rest of the family.

I also just spent half an hour wandering around the apartment and demanding that "Marcus Aurelius reveal yourself!!" and eventually found the antique book I was looking for, for an obscure quote I needed as a counterpoint -- before I gave a white chocolate to Ganesha -- because I contain multitudes

Honestly, it needs to go further than this.

We need to confront the fact that democracy and wealth hoarding cannot coexist. Allowing people to amass the resources of a small state/country allows them to act as such, which is inimical to a shared society of “one person, one vote.”
johnrogers.bsky.social
“No Kings” is great , but we really don't get a functioning democracy back until we internalize, bone deep, the instinctive response to this and every other statement like it: “I don’t care what that rich guy thinks.”

Make it your morning affirmation. Say it ten times at the top of every hour.

the protagonist isn't always the hero. they are just the person the book is about. sometimes authors write books about people who are bad and it does not mean that the author is bad

I sculpted a ceramic vase to look like a tree trunk covered in pheasant-back mushrooms (with some hidden openings to slip flowers through). After we added $4 of mums and some backyard weeds, I'm pretty happy with it. 🌼🍄
A ceramic vase made to look like a tree trunk covered in polypore fungi (pheasant-back, specifically). It's filled with a bouquet of purple chrysanthemums, small white flowers, and wild foliage. The vase is sitting on a rustic table with a curtain behind it. A closeup view of one of the fungi, revealing a hidden hole into the vase where some of the flowers are fed through. Another view of the vase from behind, showing the fungi goes all the way around the vase. A side-view of the base with more fungi.

moomin gets stereotyped as cozy pseudo-ghibli fantasy, but much like ghibli itself it's something born from hardship, what with it starting publication at the tail end of WW2 by a queer author who kept her bisexuality a secret to the public, and the earliest books being blatant post-war allegories
