Obtaining tactical info with a piping-hot side of "Get that goddamn dog off me!" ou would think a decade of reality television and boy bands would have desensitized the American people to torture. But when the public found out that Uncle Sam roughs up insurgents and terror suspects at Guantänamo Bay, in Afghanistan, and alleg edly at secret locations that don't take visitors from the Red Cross, the people piped up. Since the war on terror began, interrogation techniques have included every thing from sleep deprivation to close encounters with attack dogs (and even one sur ly West Virginia woman). But the United States has signed numerous treaties, starting with the Geneva Convention in 1929, unconditionally outlawing the practice of tortur ing enemy captives. The Bush White House, however. views terrotists as "unlawful com-batants"-since they don't fight by the rules of the Geneva Conventions, the rules do not protect them. But human rights activists and some U.S. politicians. Sen. John McCain in particular, disagree. McCain's Detainee Treatment Act of 2006 was designed to put an end to interrogation by torture. After ratifying the law, Rush issued a "signing statement" that allows him to interpret the act as he sees fit. The verbiage adds up to. "It's a war. I'm the president. Send a box of thumbscrews to Baghdad." b it acceptable to beat a detainee within an inch of his life on the slim chance that he possesses vital information? Is torture OK even though we signed a pact that states. "No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war exist to allow the practice? You do the moral math. It was hard to convince Americans torture is wrong as a moral principle during Bush's term, and that was with the debate about whether torture makes us safer. I'm afraid for a portion of Trump's base, that calculation matters less. Idea of torturing undocumented immigrants may even bring pleasure.

Shortly after President Kennedy's assassination, Congress designated the Kennedy Center as the sole national memorial to the late President within the nation's capital. Because Congress named the center by statute, changing the Kennedy Center's name requires an act of Congress. But on December 18 and 19, 2025—in scenes more reminiscent of authoritarian regimes than the American republic the sitting President and his handpicked loyalists renamed this storied center after President Trump. This is a flagrant violation of the rule of law, and it flies in the face of our constitutional order. Congress intended the Center to be a living memorial to President Kennedy-and a crown jewel of the arts for all Americans, irrespective of party. Unless and until this Court intervenes, Defendants will continue to defy Congress and thwart the law for improper ends. 2. For decades, the Kennedy Center has served as a renowned hub for the arts in the nation's capital. But when Defendant Trump entered office for his second term in January 2025, he became fixated on controlling the Kennedy Center. In February 2025, in a norm-shattering development, Defendant Trump ousted members of the Kennedy Center's Board of Trustees; installed sycophants in their place; orchestrated the firing of the Kennedy Center's President; and installed Defendant Richard Grenell, who served in the first Trump Administration, to lead the Kennedy Center. In a stunning move, Defendant Trump even appointed himself to the Board, after which his handpicked Board elected him as Chair. The ongoing politicization of the Kennedy Center has had grave consequences for the institution. ICE agents illegally break into a woman's bathroom in a NY nutrition bar manufacturing plant. "Pull up your pants," says a male agent. The agents only had a warrant to review employer documents. They didn't have a warrant to search for, detain, or arrest anyone there.
