The books-without-pictures that male audiences *are* still reading in their hundreds of thousands tend to be escapist. Thrillers, detective stories, SFF. This is just the nature of a down economy. People have plenty of grim realism in real life. Peak Male Lit corresponded to Peak Economy (1950s-90s)

I try to read all the Booker winners, so I am in the middle of this year's (Flesh) right now. It's decently well-written, but if it is the last word on masculinity (total lack of interiority, driven solely by sexual impulses that cannot be explained or controlled) then masculinity is in real trouble

One of the things that bothers me about this Epstein stuff is that it really feels as if the cabal of rich assholes pulling the strings of...everything... was real. This man had access to journalists and politicians and businesspeople and powerbrokers EVEN AFTER being sentenced.

We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.
