Rick Steves could have easily stayed apolitical in an effort to sell more books and tours. But I love that he hasn’t. Far more people in this country should be following his example
Germany had its own January 6-style attempt at a coup. It also failed. But Hitler was sent to jail.

Keep the people of Jamaica in your thoughts today. The 9am update from NHC has the pressure down to 896mb and peak winds at 180 mph, cementing Melissa as the 5th most intense hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin.
I saw this sign in Merida, Mexico, and had to check it out. Turns out it’s for a pet food store 🤷‍♂️

I'm starting to see multiple threads where bluesky folks are trying to raise money for their local food banks because of the shutdown of SNAP starting November 1... can we get a thread going for people to find each other? Drop your link and put your city in front, let's coordinate city by city!

SNAP isn't about "people who don't work." It's about people who don't get paid enough to live.

Of the 40 or so million people who rely on food stamps:

* Two-thirds are children, seniors, or disabled

* Most working-age adults who receive SNAP are employed—but in jobs that pay poverty wages
Congratulations to you, yes you, on having more yards against Utah in the first half than Colorado does. I knew you could do it!
what halftime speech would you give colorado rn
“While you’re here, your wife is getting railed and loving it”
To state the obvious, this is going to be really bad
Jamaica, in particular, will likely suffer catastrophic impacts from now rapidly-intensifying (but slow-moving) Hurricane #Melissa. A *Category 5* landfall now appears to be the most likely outcome, & 30-40+ inches of *additional* rain in mountains will lead to extreme flooding.
The proper way to watch F1 qualifying in Mexico this week

You can donate to the Chicago Street Vendor Relief Fund to help buy out a local street vendor’s cart for the day. They’ve partnered with a bike patrol / cycling solidarity group, which rides around buying out the inventory then distributing the food at homeless & unhoused encampments & shelters.

Awesome that every search engine and major social media site is forcing AI news summaries onto everyone //

Largest study of its kind shows AI assistants misrepresent news content 45% of the time – regardless of language or territory

An intensive international study was coordinated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and led by the BBC

Yes it’s the Russia approx 2001-2 textbook
Right out of the textbooks. Whether it will succeed or not remains to be seen, but there is nothing complicated about what's happening here.
How much time does he actually spend in SF now compared to back then?
Exactly. Yeah, we’re all pissed off about all of those things. But if this is the thing that’s going to open some people’s eyes who were previously apathetic, then welcome aboard, we need every single person we can get

This person is one hundred percent correct and it’s scary af. We will never “media literacy” our way out of this as a society. We are about to reap the whirlwind when it comes to misinformation, disinformation, and informational warfare.

Home Depot siding with ICE is not only fucked up but I hope it runs them out of business because I have to imagine that the contractors who hire these folks spend much more money on materials at the store than the federal government and ICE
For folks asking if they've made it *inside* a Home Depot yet as the business has clearly just continued letting agents do whatever they want in their lots, the answer is yes. This is from yesterday in Evanston.

I’ve been making a monthly donation to the San Francisco Food Bank for years. I highly recommend this!
food banks have already been under pressure over the past several years, and with SNAP benefits expiring they're going to be the only safety net for a lot of people

please donate what you can. $100 can feed several families for a month because of the discounts and purchasing power they have

I have been traveling and today I present to you...the thing I saw in the Frankfurt airport.

Is it efficient? Undeniably. Does it probably work better than the normal way? Oh certainly. Produce less of a mess? Probably?

But the existence of Condiment Udders gives me a deep, aghast disquiet.
The new Metro line that’s under construction should help with that, but they have the unique (and understandable) problem of having to dig through so many layers of history so it’s taking forever

Putting a Democrat with a Nazi tattoo in the Senate normalizes Naziism in our federal politics for a long ass time.

All these recent stories about secret Nazi group chats? Anytime that happens going forward will be met with "But Platner."

It's not a purity test. Think through the consequences.
There are a lot of things I loved about Rome, but the car centricity is a major negative. Without bus lanes, packed buses sit in traffic, so it can be faster to walk. But then the sidewalks are so narrow and crowded that walking is also unpleasant
