Hi all, I got diagnosed with leukemia back in January, and I decided to start a Substack to detail my journey, from diagnosis through treatment.

The first post is available now: johnshuntington.substack.com/p/so-howd-yo...

I would be honored if you would read it.
So, how'd you find out?
My journey through the Leuking Glass.

Look, I'm a lefty-lib who taught at a university, a suburban public high school in a conservative district, and an inner-city community college over the last decade. I've never seen an ounce of this supposed censorious behavior from my students.
This is an absolutely incredible thing to say. As someone in Ivy-ish (Duke) classrooms from 2016-2022… I call bull.

Or she was saying offensive shit.
Bro what
Erika Kirk: “No one will ever replace my husband, but I do see some similarities of my husband in JD”
God dammit, I need to go to bed, but how can you with Kershaw coming to the mound with bases loaded.
I know this is beside your point, but I've always contended that a PhD-granting institution should provide permanent library logins for their graduates.
Unlimited funding for guns but weird how we keep running out of butter.
Trump says he’s ordered Hegseth to pay the troops during the government shutdown.

“We have identified funds to do this, and Secretary Hegseth will use them to PAY OUR TROOPS.”
Yes, please, I need to go bed. My toddler doesn't know what extra innings are and will not accept that as an excuse in the morning.
Has somebody tried hitting the base ball over the fence
There is some *great* October baseball happening right now.
We're heading to the 12th in Seattle! #ALDS

"I asked Chat GPT"

Well we asked an expert and then we asked other experts in that field to review the first expert's work.
One of the best jazz shows I've ever been to was the Duke Ellington Orchestra. I was in college and a total metalhead with a soft spot for jazz, and man, they blew me away.
sometimes i watch classic hollywood films — this happened recently with HIGH NOON — and i think, “yeah i get it, this whips.” i’m having a similar experience with music right now and specifically the work of duke ellington. i’m listening to the man’s work and i’m like, “yeah, this stuff is sick”

As a child of the Reagan years, the fact that the *Republican Party* is expropriating shares in companies and shaking companies down while saying stuff like this is wild
BARTIROMO: The idea of government owning portions of public companies -- this is something that free-market have to get their heads around.

BESSENT: Maria, there are decisions that the US government makes that we believe are good for society

[new Isaac Chotiner interview]
Pretty neat distillation of why it's dangerous to let companies consolidate control over TV stations.
This just in from Sinclair: "Beginning Tuesday night Sinclair will be preempting 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show's potential return."
I wrote this nearly right years ago and conservatives keep proving me right.
A lot of Democrats have spent so long punching left that it's become instinct. They can't even grasp that there's another path.
To quote former football coach Dennis Green:

"They are who we thought they were."
What's your take on the moment we're living through in 50 words or less. [you able to quote post]

"Equally damning is that the Times, the Post, the Wall Street Journal.. haven’t chosen to make one singular story the dominant framing device of the past 6 months: The Trump administration is teeming with despicable gutter racists and President Trump and his cabinet are having them call the shots.."
Nobody Cares That White Supremacists Are Calling the Shots Now
Darren Beattie, a speechwriter for Trump early during his first term, posted the following in October 2024, a month before Trump would win re-election: “Competent white men must be in charge if you wa...

nobody can possibly predict what the labor market is going to look like over the next 40 years, it's impossible. better to get some broadly useful mental skills, and that will be a lot easier if it's something you're interested in like history, literature, etc
People really struggle to envision anything other than car dominance.

"Research, valuable not in itself but for some ulterior purpose, will be of little import except in so far as it is transmuted into common knowledge. The history that lies inert in unread books does no work in the world."

-- Carl Becker, American Historical Association presidential address, 1931
When academics sit at universities and publish highly researched academic monographs that few read, we are responsible for the destruction of our field for not engaging the public. When we engage with the public, we are betraying our scholarly mission and so are responsible for our destruction.
The history profession is in free fall, but its members can write liberal briefs that are cited in dissents to conservative decisions. Doesn’t seem like a great deal all told.
